Srinagar, Apr 18: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today accused the Election Commission of its failure to act against the ruling National Conference (NC) and its leaders for alleged repeated violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
“The EC is alert to violations of Model Code of Conduct in rest of the country, but it seems to be dead when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir,” PDP president Mehbooba Mufti a press conference here this morning.
The PDP president was referring to the NC President Farooq Abdullah’s statement in which he said if he has militants, he would carry out hundred attacks against the PDP leaders. “We hope that the EC will take action in this case as it did in the cases of Azam Khan (SP leader) and Amit Shah (BJP leader),” she said.
“We have written to Commission about Wazwan being transported to NC headquarters in police vehicles, and we also complained about the inflammatory statements of NC president Farooq Abdullah in which he had alleged that PDP has nexus with Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. However, no action has been taken so far,” alleged Mehbooaba.
The PDP president said if the EC does not take any action on the “inflammatory statements made by Abdullah, it would tantamount to hanging democracy in Kashmir”. She alleged that NC will do everything to avoid defeat in the elections but it is a test of “credibility” for the Election Commission.
Mehbooba strongly condemned the killing of Mohammad Amin Pandith, sarpanch of Gulzarpora, in Pulwama district. She said that killing took place hours after Dr Farooq Abdullah issued threats to PDP leaders of attacking them with bullets and bombs.
The PDP leader said that hours after Farooq Abdullah said the PDP needs to be taught a lesson, Pandith, who was the member of PDP, was killed in Pulwama.
Mehbooba said after facing public wrath at different places Dr Farooq Abdullah issued serious threats against PDP yesterday. He (Farooq) made his remarks at around 2:30 p.m. and at around 9:30 p.m. Pandith was shot dead.
The PDP leader said there is an obvious plan for creating a scare that the NC has been implementing in absence of a performance report that is necessary for all political parties at the time of elections.
“Since, there is nothing except death, destruction, scandals, atrocities and victimization of youth that NC-Congress could talk about as their achievement in the last five years. They see their only chance in creating scare and forcing people to boycott elections”, alleged Mehbooba.
The PDP leader said earlier Abdullah had accused her party of being in league with militants and said that it is not Pakistan but PDP that would target their workers and immediately after two NC workers were targeted and their houses set on fire in Srinagar.
