UDHAMPUR, Nov 17: Independent candidate from Udhampur constituency, Pawan Kumar Gupta addressed a series of public meetings at Samole, Bansa Mor, Lanoo, Chak -Rakhwal, Dabrai Mod, Krimchi and Jakhani today.
He lambasted the sitting MLA over his failure to provide even basic amenities like sanitation to urban poor and regretted how 98 percent of the population in slums resorts to open defecation due to lack of community toilets in the area. He said that the last housing project for slum rehabilitation was executed in 1963, when the only major slum existed in Jakhani area. “Even though over time, the number of slums has increased manifold, from 7 in 2004 to 21 in 2011, the Government has done little to improvise the living condition of the slum dwellers,” he rued and asked the MLA to account for the absence of Integrated Housing & Slum Development Program (IHSDP) in the town.
Pawan Gupta assured that if elected, he would provide sanitation and housing under IHSDP to the urban poor. He also promised to improve the accessibility to education and healthcare to these marginalized sections of society.
