Pain of Partition

Sir,
The writeup ‘The Pains of Partition’  by Col J P Singh (DE Aug14, 2016) made an interesting but painful reading. The writer has beautifully described the pain and sorrow of the people who suffered due to the partition of British India in 1947, which  is one of the most  heartbreaking events in the human history. When India got freedom after  years of British rule, India was partitioned on the lines of communities and Muslim majority areas were given to present day Pakistan and Hindu majority areas remained with the present day India though there were many people who  chose to remain in their ancestral lands. Millions of people belonging to different communities were forced to leave behind their belongings, lifelong earnings and everything and move to unknown places on the basis of their community and religion. Some of them could not believe their eyes and ears and refused to leave their homes until  communal frenzy  made them realise the harsh reality.
They were either killed or were forced to flee for their lives. The writer has rightly said that neighbour killed neighbour and looted eachother. The brutal killings of people including women and children proved that man -the so called crown of creation can become cruel and savage to such an extent. Women were molested and raped, children brutally killed and trainload of dead bodies were carried across the borders. The elderly men who have been witness to this inhuman incidents tell spine chilling accounts of  people being brutally and mercilessly killed. But even in the midst of so much chaos and brutality, traces of humanity were found. A no.of people belonging to one  community provided help and shelter to the members of other community at the risk of their own lives and  helped them reach their destinations safe and sound.Such examples of humanity, which prove that the religion of humanity is above all religions, must be archived, highlighted and included in the curriculum of children at the school level to impart the values of love, affection, compassion and communal harmony etc.
Yours etc..
Ashok Sharma,Udhampur.
