Maharashtra dethrone Mumbai to enter Ranji quarterfinals

Mumbai, Jan 11:

Defending champions Mumbai were shockingly shown the door by minnows Maharashtra, who showed tremendous resilience to record a come-from-behind eight-wicket victory here today for a place in the Ranji Trophy semifinals.
Set a target of 252 to chase for only their third outright victory in the long-running competition over the 40-time winners, Maharashtra rode on an unbeaten century from Kedar Jadhav (120 not out) and his superb 215-run unconquered third-wicket stand with 19-year-old Vijay Zol (91 not out) to turn the tables on the home team on the fourth day of the five-day match.
Jadhav, who made 51 in the first innings and also crossed 1000 runs for the season during this excellent knock, faced 144 balls and hit 14 fours and three sixes in his 239-minute knock. It was the latter’s fifth century of the season and ninth in his first-class career since debuting in 2007-08.
Zol faced 180 balls and struck 13 fours in his 258-minute unbeaten knock. Maharashtra’s victory came 10 minutes before tea when Jadhav fittingly swung Thakur for a four.
Maharashtra would meet the winners of the other quarterfinal between Bengal and Railways in the semi-finals scheduled at Indore’s Holkar Stadium from January 18-22.
Zol and Jadhav started cautiously after joining forces at the fall of the second wicket with 37 on board before opening out to totally dominate the hosts’ attack.
Mumbai’s Kaustubh Pawar dropped Zol at cover point off Abhishek Nayar, in the latter’s first over, when the left-handed youngster was at just three in a score of 43 for 2. (PTI)

Blasts ‘mastermind’ Tahseen Akhtar’s property attached

SAMASTIPUR, Jan 11:
The property of fugitive Indian Mujahideen operative Tahseen Akhtar alias Monu, considered the brain behind the Patna and Bodh Gaya serial blasts, was attached today after the deadline for his surrender lapsed.
A joint team of the NIA and Bihar Police reached Tahseen’s house in Maniyarpur village, about 12 km from the district headquarters, and attached the property in the presence of his father Wasim Akhtar and other family members, Officer in-Charge of Maniyarpur Police Station Asgar Imam said.
The NIA and police executed the order of the Patna court to attach the fugitive’s property after the deadline to surrender expired on January nine.
The team seized a computer and a TV from the house, Imam said.
Tahseen, who is believed to have taken command of IM after its co-founder Yasin Bhatkal was caught, is considered the ‘mastermind’ of the serial blasts at the rally of BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Patna on October 27 last year as well at the Buddhist shrine at Bodh Gaya earlier in July.
Eight persons were killed in Patna blasts at the Gandhi Maidan. The Bodh Gaya blasts left two Buddhist monks injured.
Tahseen had fled home in 2011. His uncle Taqi Akhtar, who is a state JD(U) leader, had said that he had no relation with the family of his brother after partition of their property almost three years ago.
Though IM activists from Bihar and Jharkhand were nabbed for the two blasts, Tahseen remained at large. (PTI)

While acquitting the accused person, Presiding Officer observed, “from the perusal of evidence of prosecutrix, there is nothing to suggest that accused had committed the offence with which he has been charged because prosecutrix has specifically stated during the course of testimony that the accused has neither done any bad act with her nor cheated her”.

Govt misleading KPs on return: RIK

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Jan 11: While out rightly rejecting the return of displaced Pandits to clusters at district headquarters in Kashmir Valley, Roots In Kashmir (RIK), a displaced youth initiative today said that the return should be in such a way so that the community does not face the displacement again.
The RIK is for the settlement of the displaced community in a single satellite city / twin city within Valley, its J&K head Vir Saraf told reporters here along with S N Tickoo and M K Raina well known social activists.
Accusing the Government of misleading the community with its so-called return formula, he said that the Government till date has not come out with any road map on return which indicates it was not sincere in taking the Pandits back.
Referring to recent statement of Chief Minister, Saraf said KPs want passage of the Shrines Bill so that it becomes the law. By merely saying that the Bill is put to vote, NC tries to play politics ahead of the general elections, he added.
Admitting that vote is a great power in democracy, he reminded Chief Minister that it was the Government which in connivance with Election Commission have and are creating impediments to stop KPs from exercising their franchise.
Saraf said the Chief Minister has penetrated into the community recently while during last five years of his rule he ignored the community altogether. Seeing that the elections are round the corner, he came to address the KPs like other political leaders.
Taking serious exception to CM’s statement that KP leaders who do not know the pain of migration and staying in guest houses can’t be called the community representatives, Saraf said that KP leaders living in any corner of the world felt the pain of their brethren and were concerned for their cause unlike the Government which mocked its pain repeatedly.
He however appreciated the CM for admitting that Pandits were forced to leave under threat of gun and termed it his positive gesture as old argument of NC leaders was that the ex Governor of the State was instrumental in exodus of KPs.
He however wanted to know from the Chief Minister that why the Coalition Government is silent on NHRC report which termed happenings to KPs in 1989-90 akin to genocide. Moreover why CM is silent on interlocutors report which recommended twin city on the name of Nav Srinagar be built for the displaced people.
