Aries : You are a touchy one. People will rub you the wrong way today. But remember that getting needlessly annoyed will bring nothing but more complications. Contemplate in seclusion about the root cause of the problem. Ganesha’s hint? It is closer than you imagine.

Taurus : Your enthusiasm will be as contagious as your smile today, predicts Ganesha. People will stand charmed by your high spirits. There will be stressful moments, but things will look up later in the day. Take some time off if things get too hectic for you.

Gemini : Today, you are likely to be rather emotional and sentimental, says Ganesha. Your love for performing arts may make you take up lessons in classical music or traditional dance. And much to your delight, your sweetheart will treat you to a surprise candlelit dinner.

Cancer : You are likely start the day in the best of spirits today. Your enthusiasm and cheerfulness will be infectious, and you will be able to lift the mood wherever you go. However, your enthusiasm can be short-lived and pummelled under the weight of some bad news, leaving you distraught. Take a break in case you feel stressed out, advises Ganesha. Things are likely to look up by the time the day ends.

Leo : Your entire day will be spent at work. Those working in large corporations will have to fulfill heightened expectations from their superiors. Housewives will need to tackle other work, apart from their daily chores. It is an important day for you, says Ganesha.

Virgo : Ganesha sees you keeping away from a joint venture. You are capable enough to handle big projects yourself. You are most likely to lead and coordinate large teams and extract work from them as you will.

Libra : Ganesha says today you will get the opportunity to lay bare your thoughts and feelings and exchange ideas with others. Your mind will be at ease and more relieved when you have opened up. Your business acumen will be praiseworthy today. Towards evening you will reap the benefits of all those good deeds that you may have done in the near past.

Scorpio : It may have been on the cards for long and finally, you may end up buying a state-of-the-art motor vehicle or a palatial house of your dreams today. In addition, your generous mood may also egg you on to buy an expensive gift for your life partner. If you do not let the generosity burn a hole through your pocket, you may have an overall satisfying day, says Ganesha.

Sagittarius : Your business is likely to grow with leaps and bounds, foresees Ganesha. Increase in financial returns will keep you happy for the entire day. Work in progress gives out positive signals. Your expert advise will be valued at work. In short, a day full of activities.

Capricorn : If you are a sports person, you will enjoy both good health and fame, while engineers will mull investing money in new business ventures, foresees Ganesha. But make sure you know what you are doing, a minor slip can cost you a fortune, and you would have realised by now that repenting won’t undo anything. Your social standing may get stronger; people may develop a high opinion about, and your reputation may get a boost too.

Aquarius : You may fall in love today! If single, romance colours your day with a rainbow. If married, you may enjoy a quiet but romantic evening with your spouse. Ganesha says that if nothing else, it’s a good time to pour over your photo albums and float in nostalgia.

Pisces : You will be treading new ground at work. Exciting as that sounds, it merely means you will have to do a lot of travelling today. You will also find yourself swamped with drafting new business proposals, holding meetings, or otherwise networking over the phone. On the brighter side, your travels are unlikely to involve the cramps of flying economy class, says Ganesha.

China’s Moon rover develops snag

BEIJING, Jan 25:  China’s first moon rover ‘Yutu’ has experienced a “mechanical control abnormity” and scientists are organising an overhaul, authorities said today.

The abnormity occurred due to “the complicated lunar surface environment,” the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence (SASTIND) said, without giving further details.

The abnormity emerged before the rover went into its second dormancy at dawn today as the lunar night fell again, the state-run Xinhua news agency said, citing SASTIND.

Scientists were “organising an overhaul”, it said, without giving further details.

The Jade Rabbit, or ‘Yutu’ in Chinese, was deployed on the moon’s surface on December 15, several hours after the Chang’e-3 probe landed.

On January 18 rover ‘Yutu’ collected a large amount space observation and moon exploration data.

The lunar probe mission, comprising the lander Chang’e-3 and rover Yutu, was launched in December as part of the second phase of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Programme.

The mission, which made the first soft-landing on the Moon since 1976, makes China the third country to successfully send a lunar rover to the moon, after the US and the former Soviet Union. (PTI)

South Sudan fighting continues after ceasefire: UN

JUBA, Jan 25:  Government troops and rebels in South Sudan still fought sporadic battles after a ceasefire came into force today, the United Nations said.

The ceasefire came into effect at 1730 GMT despite rebel accusations that the army had attacked their positions in two separate regions just hours earlier.

“The UN Mission in South Sudan says that sporadic fighting took place in parts of the country today,” including after the ceasefire, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.

Rebel spokesman Lul Ruai Koang said before the ceasefire deadline that “simultaneous attacks have been launched” by the army on positions in the northern oil state of Unity, and in the volatile eastern Jonglei region.

But army spokesman Philip Aguer said he had “no reports of fighting”, and that clashes in Jonglei had taken place before the deal was signed, when rebels attacked government forces.

Both sides pledged yesterday to halt fighting within 24 hours and end five weeks of bitter conflict that has left thousands dead, but both sides have said they doubt the other can fully control the forces on the ground.

Koang alleged that South Sudanese government troops — as well as Ugandan soldiers and rebels from neighbouring Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) — had attacked rebel positions, warning they had the “right to defend themselves against this senseless aggression.”

The ceasefire agreement was signed yesterday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa by representatives of South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and rebel delegates loyal to ousted vice president Riek Machar, and was greeted by cheers from regional peace brokers and diplomats.

“It is critical that both parties implement the cessation of hostilities agreement in full and immediately,” the UN spokesman said.

US President Barack Obama, whose country provided crucial backing on South Sudan’s path to statehood, described the deal as “a critical first step toward building a lasting peace”.

Kiir urged those rebels not under Machar’s control to also respect the deal.

“Now that people have fought, people should come back to their senses and we sit down so that we can resolve this conflict through negotiation,” Kiir said in address yesterday.

Up to 10,000 people are believed to have been killed in the fighting pitting forces loyal to Kiir against a loose coalition of army defectors and ethnic militia nominally headed by Machar, a seasoned guerrilla fighter. (Agencies)
