Jugal raises issue of West Pak, PoJK refugees in LS

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, July 16: BJP State president & MP, Jugal Kishore Sharma raised the issue of refugees from West Pakistan and PoJK, who had been forced to take refugee in Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 and are residing since then here as refugees in Lok Sabha during Question Hour today.
Jugal pointed out that these refugees have become victims of State Government’s lopsided thinking and ideology. The fact of their taking up residence in Jammu and Kashmir has proved to be grave misfortune for them. The West Pakistan refugees have no citizenship status and rights in the J&K though they have been continuously residing here for the last more than 65 years. They have no say in the local affairs as they cannot vote for the Assembly elections nor can they have any property here and are homeless people. The refugees of PoJK have also huge problems which have not been till date addressed by the State Government. Their claims in lieu of their properties left by them in PoJK have not been settled or even addressed till date. This approach of unconcern shown by the State Government is because of its retrograde thinking and mindset.
Jugal Kishore Sharma’s expression of anguish and suffering of the refugees evoked strong sympathetic response from the other members of the House, who in one voice supported that the problems of the West Pakistan and PoJK refugees be attended to at the earliest and should not be allowed to linger on for long.

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, July 16: Jammu Tourism Action Committee (JTAC), an amalgam of various trade organizations of Jammu City, has severely condemned the recommendation by Jammu Development Authority (JDA) to gradually shift the General Bus Stand Jammu from its present site at BC Road and its diversification at four different places, away from the old city.
A meeting of JTAC held here today under the chairmanship of its convener, Inderjeet Khajuria, termed the recommendations of JDA as contradictory to the assurances give by the authorities at the highest level of Chief Minister.
“The Chief Minister while laying the foundation stone of Jammu Cable Car Project had announced that the present Bus Stand will continue as terminal point for the buses of all routes. Similarly, the Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, had publically announced at a function in the Bus Stand premises that the present Bus Stand will operate as terminal point of buses of all routes including inter State buses”, the meeting said and condemned the latest JDA report sent to J&K High Court in which JDA has recommended that the present Bus Stand should be made as inter-city Bus Stand, while inter State buses should operate from the newly set up Bus Stand at Narwal.
JDA in its report to High Court has said that inter State bus terminal at Transport Nagar and bus terminal for RS Pura buses near old RTO office, Ware House, are operational, while it described the present Bus Stand as intercity bus terminal.
At a time when the traders of Jammu City and stakeholders in Jammu tourism are fighting for making Jammu City and its surroundings as independent tourist destination and the authorities at the highest level have assured the same, the report by JDA is total negation of the same, the speakers said.

Stern punishment if Anderson is guilty: Boycott

London, July 16: Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott has recommended “stern punishment” for James Anderson if the England pacer is found guilty of abusing and pushing Ravindra Jadeja on the second day of the first Test at Trent Bridge.

“If anybody’s found guilty, and if I had a say in it, I believe he should be punished and punished harshly, that will stop it. I think everybody (found guilty) deserves a stern punishment. I didn’t see any pushing and I could have easily missed it. If he’s found guilty of that, then there’s no excuse,” Boycott said.

Anderson could be banned for two to four Tests if charges against him are proved. The altercation took place during the lunch break of the second day’s play when the two players were walking back to the pavillion for lunch. It is not yet known what triggered the fracas.

Jadeja was unbeaten on 24, and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 81, while Anderson had bowled the last over before lunch. Anderson was charged under Level 3 of the ICC Code of Conduct after India team manager Sunil Dev lodged the complaint.

“What is going on in cricket, verbals between players, and particularly bowlers trying to rile batsmen by flagging them off, I don’t like it,” Boycott was quoted as saying by ‘ESPN cricinfo’.

He added: “I’ve never agreed with it, I don’t think there’s a place for it in cricket. The modern player, in a lot of countries, accepts it as a norm as if they are growing up with it and everybody does it and everybody should do it.

“They believe it is not hurting cricket. Well, I believe it is. Jimmy (Anderson) is known to be one that talks to players. Now what he actually says I don’t know, I’m not near enough to hear it and I certainly can’t lip-read. But he is known to do a lot of talking. I don’t agree with it.” (PTI)

Elgar ton takes South Africa to 268-5

Galle, July 16: Opener Dean Elgar notched a superb 103 today as South Africa reached 268 for 5 on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Elgar dominated both pace and spin bowling to smash 11 fours and three sixes during his 187-ball knock and was supported well by Faf du Plessis, who struck a fine 80 coming in at No.3.

Elgar batted just over two sessions and hit three sixes and 11 fours to bring up his second Test century.

However, the hosts hit back in the final session with four wickets as South Africa suffered a middle-order slump.

At stumps, wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock was batting on 17 and Dale Steyn was yet to score.

The left-handed Elgar seized the early initiative with free strokes against the seam bowlers and good use of the feet against spinners.

Elgar and de Plessis were not afraid to go for the shots and also rotated the strike well in what was the fourth century partnership between them.

The pair added 125 runs for the second wicket after Elgar and Alviro Petersen had put on 70 in their opening stand.

Elgar got to the three-figure mark with a six to long-on off off-spinner Dilruwan Perera to move from 96 to 102 after batting cautiously earlier in the 90s.

He was caught behind swishing at a delivery from seam bowler Suranga Lakmal, who bagged two wickets in the last session.

South Africa had looked set to end the day in a better

position but lost new captain Hashim Amla for 11 with Du Plessis and A B de Villiers (21) also following him as South Africa slipped from 195-1 to 266-5.

Du Plessis was well set, striking five fours and a six but was caught at short leg off off-spinner Dilruwan Perera to give Sri Lanka the window of opportunity.

Earlier, Petersen was trapped lbw by Perera with a straight delivery after striking four fours off 46 deliveries.

Petersen asked for a review, but replays showed the ball would have hit leg stump.

This is the first Test for South Africa after the retirement of Graeme Smith. Amla became only the second non-white captain of South Africa after Ashwell Prince, and the first to be appointed as permanent skipper.

South Africa won a preceding one-day series 2-1 under de Villiers, who is playing in this match as a specialist batsman due to a hamstring injury with de Kock to keep wickets. (Agencies)
