Saif is a brilliant actor, has taken cinema forward: Kareena

MUMBAI, July 27:
Kareena Kapoor says her actor husband Saif Ali Khan is not comfortable doing a slapstick comedy like ‘Humshakals’.
Kareena, 33, thinks Saif is a “brilliant actor” who has taken cinema forward.
“I haven’t seen the film (Humshakals) yet. Of course he made a mistake and he feels that, because people don’t like to see him in that space as he has given such wonderful performances in films like ‘Omkara’, ‘Parineeta’ and others. He has done films that have been path breaking. Saif is one actor who has taken cinema ahead,” Kareena Said.
Sajid Khan’s recently released ‘Humshakals’ received flak both from the critics and the public. Saif, who was one of the lead actors in the film, also admitted that he had made a mistake by doing ‘Humshakals’.
“He is such a brilliant actor. So, may be some people thought they did not want to see him in this kind of genre. You can see another actor in this genre but not see someone like Saif. So in that sense he thought it was a mistake,” she said.
Kareena too has done comedy films like the ‘Golmaal’ series, but she says those were not slapstick and they had strong story.
Kareena is now looking forward to the release of Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham Returns’. (PTI)

Google mapping comes under CBI scrutiny

NEW DELHI, July 27: CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) against Internet giant Google over Mapathon 2013, an event organised by the US company, for allegedly violating laws by mapping sensitive areas and defence installations, prohibited by law.

The CBI registered the PE based on a complaint filed by Surveyor General of India’s office to the Union Home Ministry in which Google was accused of had been indulging in activities of mapping several areas which were not included in the maps of the country, official sources said here.

The Internet giant had not taken permission from Survey of India, country’s official mapping agency, before organising a mapping competition in February-March 2013 when they asked citizens to map their neighbourhoods, especially details related to hospitals and restaurants.

Alarmed by Mapathon, the Survey of India (SoI), India’s national survey and mapping organisation under the Department of Science and Technology, asked the Internet giant to share its details where they found that there were several coordinates having details of sensitive defence installations which are out of the public domain.

Highlighting the violations to the Home Ministry, the SoI said only it was mandated to undertake ‘Restricted’ category surveying and mapping, and no other government or private organisations or individual are authorised to do so.

As per the National Map Policy 2005, “the responsibility for producing, maintaining and disseminating the topographic map database of the whole country, which is the foundation of all spatial data, vests with the Survey of India”.

Responding to queries, Google India said, “We are in touch with relevant authorities and take national regulations and security very seriously. We are not aware of any privacy issues and have nothing more to share at this point in time.”

After initial probe by Delhi police, the case was handed

to CBI as investigations required access to places across the country and, if need be, questioning of some individuals with the help of FBI as Google is incorporated in the US.

It was alleged that Google India had launched a nationwide contest and people might have passed on maps and other key details of strategic installations located in other cities and states to the US company, the sources added.

For SoI, it was clarified that the company never took any permission before undertaking the mapping exercise, and from national security point of view, civil and military Vital Areas, Vital Points (VPs) cannot be shown in the map/data published in public domain.

The CBI may be roping in some Army officials in its probe as some of the sensitive installations have allegedly been mapped in its services, the sources said. (PTI)

Rajnath holds high-level meet on civil services exam row

NEW DELHI, July 27:
Amid protests from civil services aspirants against the new exam pattern, the Government today convened a high-level meeting to resolve the issue.
The meeting was chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh among others.
“There was a discussion on the issue and ways to resolve it,” a senior Government official, who attended the meeting, said here.
A decision on whether or not to change the syllabus of civil services examination and postpone the preliminary test, slated to be held on August 24, is likely to be taken soon, he said.
The meeting, which was held at the Home Minister’s residence, was also attended by S K Sarkar, Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), and officials from the PMO and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Civil services aspirants have been protesting in the national capital and demanding change in the pattern of civil services preliminary examination. The issue has been raised in Parliament too.
The Government has urged them to call off their protest which intensified from Thursday night after the UPSC, which conducts the examination, started issuing admit cards to the aspirants for the preliminary exam scheduled to be held next month.
A three-member Government appointed committee is looking into the demands of civil services aspirants to change the pattern of the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) to give level-playing field to those coming from rural areas.
Jitendra Singh, who is also the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, had earlier urged the UPSC to postpone the preliminary exam in view of the students demand.
There are two compulsory papers of 200 marks each in the preliminary examination.
These papers are also known as CSAT I and CSAT II.
The CSAT-II paper carries questions on comprehension, interpersonal skills including communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision-making and problem- solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy, and English language comprehension skills (of Class X level).
Students have been objecting to the level of aptitude and English language questions being asked in the CSAT II paper claiming they are much above the standard prescribed for the examination. The civil services examination is conducted in three stages– preliminary, main, and interview– to choose candidates for Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others. If I don’t get work, I will retire: Om Puri

MUMBAI, July 27: Veteran actor Om Puri says filmmakers here do not write roles for older actors which leaves them with no choice but to retire.

“There are not many roles written for older actors and it gets difficult to get exciting roles today unlike the west. In western countries, there are roles written for older actors. Films are made on them, including love stories. But that is not the case here,” Puri told PTI in an interview.

“If I don’t get work, then I will retire only. I don’t go and knock doors for work, if I get work I will do it. I will do theatre otherwise,” he added.

Puri, 63, will be seen next in ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’, which is an upcoming American comedy-drama film but back home he has no films in his kitty.

“I don’t have work… Tell someone to give me work. I am serious, I am not having any work to do right now. Priyadarshan was there (who used to take him in his films), but he is also not doing anything right now,” he said.

“In this age there are not many roles being written for us. And I don’t call up people and ask for work,” he said.

Amitabh Bachchan still gets work at the age of 71, and Puri feels the megastar’s involvement with commercial films has become a boon for him.

“They (filmmakers) take stars. They have been stars, I am not a star… Not commercially at least. I have been a wonderful actor, but not a commercial star. For Mr Bachchan films are being made like ‘Sarkar’ and others. I have never got Rs one crore for a film, I get Rs 40-50 lakh only, or Rs 15-25 lakh,” he said.

Puri is not disillusioned with the way Bollywood treats senior actors as every artiste has his or her time.

“I don’t expect anything from anybody. When you grow old…Your days are gone, it is part of life. They (Hollywood filmmakers) make films with older stars where they play main parts, but that is not the tradition with us. Here films are made for money, they (in Hollywood) make films with passion, may be not all films.

However, he feels there are a few filmmakers in India who are passionate about their movies.

“We have filmmakers who make films with some kind of responsibility and take cinema seriously like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Prakash Jha. But now these people also take stars…Without stars they cannot work. Then, they even add item songs in a film, like Prakash Jha’s ‘Chakravyuh’ was a good film but he added a (item) song,” he added. Sangakkara stars for Sri Lanka on rain-hit day

Colombo, July 27:

Kumar Sangakkara and skipper Angelo Mathews struck brisk half-centuries to help Sri Lanka set up a thrilling finale to the series-deciding second Test against South Africa here today.

Sangakkara (72) hit his tenth 50-plus score of the year and Mathews chipped in with an unbeaten 63 as the hosts declared their second innings on 229-8 shortly before close of play to set the visitors an imposing target of 369.

At stumps on a rain-interrupted day four, South Africa were 38-1, needing 331 more runs off a minimum 98 overs to pull off a series-clinching win. Quinton de Kock (21) and Dean Elgar (13) were the not out batsmen at the crease.

The hosts, who posted 421 in their first essay, had bowled out South Africa for 282 in their first innings to gain a 139-run lead.

South Africa lead the two-Test series 1-0 after winning the opener in Galle by 153 runs. Even a draw in this game will see the Proteas reclaim the world number one ranking from Australia.

South Africa’s chase did not start the way they had hoped for as they lost their first wicket with just six runs on the board.

Opener Alviro Petersen (zero) failed for the second time in the game when he was caught off left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who opened the bowling. The Sri Lankan batsmen had started off confidently after rain interrupted play for an hour following the lunch break.

Sangakkara unleashed his trademark silken pulls and drives to race to the 50-run mark with a boundary off leg-spinner Imran Tahir (2-76). Just when he was looking good for a bigger score, he

edged to wicketkeeper De Kock off Morne Morkel (4-45), bringing an end to his enterprising knock that included eight hits to the fence.

Kithruwan Vithanage (seven) was superbly caught by Faf du Plessis who ran backwards without taking his eyes off the ball and then dived forward to pluck it inches off the ground.

Test debutant Niroshan Dickwella top-edged to AB de Villiers off Dale Steyn (2-59), failing to repeat his first innings performance which saw him score 72.

Tahir bowled Dilruwan Perera and Morkel sent back Rangana Herath, prompting skipper Mathews to declare the innings.

Earlier, Sri Lanka added a healthy 97 runs in the first session while losing their openers and the prolific Mahela Jayawardene. Opener Upul Tharanga (30) looked in good nick but he edged behind to the keeper while trying to drive Steyn in the sixth over of the morning.

Kaushal Silva welcomed Tahir (1-67) with a neat sweep to the fence in the bowler’s first over, setting the tone for the rest of the session that saw the hosts score at a quick pace.

Silva had made 26 when he scooped a drive, offering an easy catch to Vernon Philander at point off Morkel.
