Sunkonnect plans to cut 15 pc carbon  dioxide emissions in edu institutes over 4 yrs

NEW DELHI, Apr 22:  Sunkonnect, a renewable energy management consulting firm, on Wednesday announced plans to reduce 15 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions from educational institute campuses over the next four years.
It is a targeted reduction of approximately 34 million tonnes of COâ‚‚, an unprecedented effort in the industry and a move that positions India’s education sector as a frontrunner in the national climate action, a company statement said.
India’s education sector stands among the largest in the world, comprising over 248 million students, 1.47 million schools, more than 43 million university and college students, and nearly 10 million teachers.
This vast network of educational institutions generates a significant environmental footprint, with buildings alone producing an estimated 230 million tonnes of COâ‚‚ every year, a number that continues to grow as the sector expands, it noted.
Recognising the urgent need to address this challenge and make India’s educational campuses energy-efficient, Sunkonnect has announced an ambitious plan to cut 15 per cent of these emissions in the next four years, according to the statement.
Most educational institutions in India operate primarily during daylight hours, taking full advantage of the abundant sunshine.
This creates a unique opportunity to harness renewable energy by integrating solar power, paving the way for truly net-zero campuses with real-time carbon footprint monitoring, it pointed out.
Capitalising on this potential, Sunkonnect, through its Sunsol solution, aims to install solar rooftops on more than 5,000 schools across India over the next 7 to 10 years.
Rohit Sikkewal, Sustainability and Climate Change Solution Expert at Sunkonnect, said, “Our educational institutions are more than just infrastructure; they are the breeding ground for the next generation of thinkers and leaders”.
Sunkonnect has recently partnered with a private university as part of its broader decarbonisation strategy.
Through such collaborations, the company will roll out greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint assessment and craft a comprehensive sustainability roadmap for campuses, establishing a benchmark for environmental stewardship in academia.
This initiative also marks Sunkonnect’s strategic entry into India’s USD 35 billion education market, meeting the rising demand for world-class sustainability standards.
With electricity usage accounting for 78 per cent of campus emissions globally and Indian higher education institutions averaging 2.67 tonnes COâ‚‚ emissions per student, the path to meaningful reduction is clear — renewables, energy efficiency, and smarter resource management.
Sunkonnect’s plans include energy audits and retrofits, LED lighting upgrades, waste segregation, and elimination of single-use plastics.
The next phase (one to three years) will include rooftop solar PV installations, rainwater harvesting, EV charging stations, and biogas plants.
Long-term strategies include net-zero pledges, vehicle-free zones, biodiversity monitoring, and advanced water systems, all focused on reducing emissions per student and per square foot. (PTI)

Tesla will bring humanoid robot Optimus  to India at appropriate time: Coofficial

MUMBAI, Apr 22: American electric carmaker Tesla will bring its humanoid robot, Optimus to India at the right time, a senior company official said on Wednesday.
The company will also look at bringing its vertically integrated energy solution business to the country at an appropriate time, Tesla chief for APAC region Isabel Fan told reporters here.
She said Tesla will start volume production of Optimus later this year in the US. “Humanoid robots will be big part of our life in the future, ” Fan said.
Humanoid robots would have several uses, including as a companion or to execute “dangerous task” that a human would not prefer to do, besides providing home medical requirement support, she noted.
“I have a commitment when it (time) comes right on the things (as) you have seen (in) other markets, we want to bring to India. That’s the goal,” Fan said referring to the company’s humanoid robot.
With the help of robots human lives will be much easier, she added. “This is a good option for humans to have a better use of time and be more productive.”
On Tesla’s energy solutions business, she said it is significant globally but “we don’t talk enough in India”.
“We are also a vertically integrated energy solution company, from solar, from energy storage to the usage plans and EV is one of them,” Fan said, adding the company also offers mega pack power storage for commercial and power wall for consumers.
“So hopefully in the near future, I think we have needs. India is not short of sun (and) we may need,” she said, adding when the right time comes the company would bring the energy solutions business to the country.
Fan was speaking at the launch of Tesla’s second model in India, the six-seater, three-row SUV Model Y L here. (PTI)

LG Visits GMC Jammu To Inquire About Health Of Udhampur Accident Victims

JAMMU, Apr 22: Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday visited the Government Medical College (GMC) here to assess the condition of two critically injured victims of the recent road accident in Udhampur.
At least 21 people were killed and 51 others injured when an overcrowded passenger bus plunged nearly 100 metres down a hillside in Ramnagar area of Udhampur district on April 20.
An official spokesman said a team of doctors briefed Sinha on the health condition of the injured and the specialized treatment protocols being followed.
Hospital authorities informed the LG that Hans Raj and Lakhwinder Singh are under the constant supervision of senior healthcare professionals and receiving the highest standard of clinical attention.
Sinha directed the hospital administration to ensure the best possible medical care for their speedy recovery, the spokesman said.

CM Omar Blames Negligence For Udhampur Bus Crash, Vows Action After Probe

UDHAMPUR, Apr 22: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday blamed negligence for the fatal road accident in Udhampur, saying preliminary findings point to lapses on the part of the bus operator, and assured that strict action will be taken once the inquiry report is submitted.
At least 21 people were killed and 51 others injured when an overcrowded passenger bus plunged nearly 100 metres down a hillside in Ramnagar area of Udhampur district on April 20.
Accompanied by Health Minister Sakeena Itoo, Abdullah visited Government Medical College (GMC) hospital Udhampur, where he met those injured in the road accident.
He interacted with their families, and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care with continuous monitoring.
The chief minister also assured full support to the affected families and emphasized the need for strict measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Talking to reporters, the chief minister said it is deeply unfortunate that many precious lives were lost but what makes it even more tragic is that the accident occurred due to the “negligence of the bus owner”.
“The person who was given control of the bus was not the regular driver; the actual driver was on leave. The owner handed over the steering to someone who had been driving a truck until recently. We cannot say that the government does not take action against such people. When we reviewed the record of this bus, it was found that more than 15 challans (fines) had already been issued against it,” the chief minister said.
He said the Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur Minga Sherpa has ordered an inquiry, and one of the senior officers is investigating the incident. “Let the investigation be completed; once the officer’s report comes, whatever recommendations are made in that report will be implemented,” the chief minister said.
Dismissing poor road conditions as a factor, he emphasised that reckless driving habits like overspeeding, overloading, and wrong-side driving remain a persistent challenge.
“The real challenge is that while roads can be improved, driver behaviour cannot be fixed overnight. Instances of wrong-side driving, overspeeding and overloading continue to put lives at risk,” he said.
While reaffirming the government’s commitment to accountability, Abdullah also stressed the need for responsibility among transport operators. He acknowledged the delicate balance authorities must maintain between enforcement and public demand for transport services. (Agencies)

“For Me, Ethics Hold More Weight Than Any Position”: Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung Resigns

Kathmandu [Nepal], Apr 22: Nepal’s Home Minister, Sudan Gurung, on Wednesday resigned from his post, citing moral responsibility and the need for a fair investigation into concerns raised over his financial holdings.
In a Facebook post announcing his resignation, Gurung said he had taken public criticism seriously and chose to step down to uphold ethical standards in public life.
“I, Sudan Gurung, have been performing my duties as the Home Minister with utmost honesty since Chaitra 13, 2082 (March 26, 2026). Recently, I have taken the questions, comments, and public concerns raised by citizens regarding my shares and related matters very seriously, ” he said.
Emphasising the importance of integrity, he said public trust must come before holding office.”For me, ethics hold more weight than any position, and there is no power greater than public trust. Today’s ‘Gen Z’ movement, which demands good governance, transparency, and accountability, carries the same message: public life must be clean and leadership must be accountable,” he said.
Gurung also referred to the broader political context and sacrifices made in the country’s past, saying accountability was essential when questions arise. “When questions are raised against a government built on the blood and sacrifice of my 46 brothers and sisters, the only answer is morality,” Gurung said.
Announcing his decision to step down, he said the move would ensure transparency and avoid any conflict of interest. He said, “Therefore, to ensure a fair investigation into the matters concerning me and to prevent any conflict of interest while holding office, I have resigned from the post of Home Minister effective today.
He urged the citizens, media, and youth to commit to honesty and accountability in public life. “I have fulfilled my moral responsibility. Now, I appeal to my dear media friends, all Nepali brothers and sisters, and the youth: if we truly desire change, we must all stand on the path of truth, honesty, and self-purification. Information regarding where certain media personnel hold ‘sweet shares’ will eventually come to light. Those who aspire for ‘Ram Rajya’ (ideal governance) must also possess the courage to sacrifice and show moral strength,” the former Nepali Home Minister said. (AGENCIES)

Preventing Pahalgam-Like Terror Attack Top Priority Of Govt: CM Omar Abdullah

‘War must end now’: J&K CM Abdullah flags global fallout of West Asia conflict

UDHAMPUR, Apr 22: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday asserted that preventing a repeat of the Pahalgam-like tragedy remains a top priority.
He stressed that even if Pakistan attempts such actions, we will not allow them to succeed.
Marking the first anniversary of the terror attack in Pahalgam that left 25 tourists and a local pony-ride operator dead on this day last year, Abdullah emphasised joint action by the elected government, the Centre, and law enforcement agencies to ensure lasting security in the region.
He said the day continues to weigh heavily on the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as the region remembers the innocent tourists who lost their lives in the terror attack.
“We pay tribute to the innocent lives lost in a senseless act of terror. They had come only to spend their holidays, yet were mercilessly targeted and killed.
Even today, we stand in solidarity with their grieving families,” the chief minister said after visiting those injured in a recent bus accident at Government Medical College (GMC) hospital here.
At least 21 people were killed and 51 others injured on April 20 when an overcrowded passenger bus plunged nearly 100 metres down a hillside in the Ramnagar area of Udhampur, crushing an auto-rickshaw before landing upside down on the road below.
The chief minister said, “On that day (April 22, 2025), we resolved – and we remain committed – that we must do everything possible to ensure such (Pahalgam type) incidents never happen again. Whether it is the elected government, the central government, or the law and order machinery, we will all work together to make this effort successful.” When asked about any change in Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, he said such assessments are best left to those with access to intelligence reports.
“I can only say that we will make every possible effort to ensure that even if Pakistan intends such actions, we will not allow them to succeed. That will remain our priority,” he added.
On the impact of the Pahalgam terror attack on tourism, Omar Abdullah said, “It is your job to give report cards; ours is to make efforts. Our focus is to maintain normalcy.” He acknowledged that the attack has had some impact compared to last year, but expressed optimism as the season progresses. “We expect a good number of visitors to come to Jammu and Kashmir – whether for darshan at Vaishno Devi Temple, the Amarnath Yatra, or for general tourism,” he said.
The chief minister urged pilgrims to attend the upcoming Yatra in large numbers.
The 57-day annual Amarnath Yatra is set to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. The pilgrimage will be
conducted via both the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route, with advance registration beginning on April 15.
Meanwhile, calling for an immediate end to the conflict in West Asia involving Iran, the US and Israel, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said its repercussions are being felt worldwide, including rising oil prices and disruptions to critical supply chains.
However, he also noted that compared to many other countries, the situation in India remains relatively stable.
“We want this war to end; it should not be happening. As for the reasons behind the attack on Iran, only the countries directly involved – the US and Israel – can explain their actions, as their intentions remain unclear to us.
“What has happened is wrong, but it must stop now,” Abdullah told reporters, warning that the impact of the conflict is being felt globally.
Pointing to rising oil prices, shrinking supplies and disruptions in essential supply chains globally, Abdullah said several countries, particularly in Europe, are already facing severe strain, with fuel for ships being rationed.
“In our neighbouring country (Pakistan), airplanes are allowed entry but not permitted to refuel before departure,” he said, underscoring the scale of the crisis.
Despite the challenges, Abdullah said India’s situation remains comparatively stable. However, he warned that a prolonged conflict could deepen global disruptions.
“We hope the war ends as soon as possible,” Abdullah said, reiterating the need for stability amid growing international uncertainty.
Late Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said the US would indefinitely extend the ceasefire with Iran, which was due to expire on Wednesday, to give Tehran time to come up with a “unified proposal” ahead of possible negotiations.
Iran has offered no formal acknowledgment of Trump’s ceasefire extension so far. (Agencies)

Pahalgam Terror Attack: Ponywallah Adil Shah’s Sacrifice Immortalised In History, Says Shinde

People gather outside the newly inaugurated house by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, virtually, for Syed Haider Shah, father of Adil Hussain Shah, a ponywallah who along with 25 tourists, lost his life in the attack by a group of terrorists on April 22 last year, in Anantnag.

MUMBAI, Apr 22: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said that the sacrifice of ponywallah Syed Adil Hussain Shah, one of the 26 victims of last year’s Pahalgam terror attack, has been etched in history and will never be forgotten by the country.
On Tuesday, a newly built house was handed over to Shah’s family — an act Shinde described as honouring the brave heart’s sacrifice rather than merely providing shelter.
Shah, along with 25 tourists, lost his life in the attack by a group of terrorists in Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist spot, on April 22 last year.
He had tried to snatch a terrorist’s rifle during the attack and was shot dead. Following this, Shiv Sena head Shinde had given financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to his family and also promised a house for them.
On Tuesday, Shiv Sena ministers Yogesh Kadam and Sanjay Shirsat handed over the keys of the new house, named ‘Anand Nath Sadan’ in the memory of Shinde’s mentor Anand Dighe, to Shah’s family at his native Hapatnar village in Pahalgam.
“Adil was not merely a young man, he was a blazing lamp of the nation’s pride, one who sacrificed his life for humanity, transcending religion, language and creed,” the deputy CM said, attending the event through video conferencing. “A mother’s son, a family’s pillar, snatched away in an instant; but this sacrifice made for humanity will never be forgotten by the country; it has been etched in history,” he added.
Shinde also said he made every effort to safely evacuate tourists stranded in Srinagar after the terror attack last year and monitored the entire operation.
When local residents raised the demand for developing the area as a tourist zone, Shinde assured them that efforts would be made to take a positive decision in cooperation with the central government.
A large number of tourists from Maharashtra visit Kashmir, and special attention would be given to increasing this number further in the future, he added.
Shinde also recalled the legacy of party founder Bal Thackeray and said, “The late Balasaheb Thackeray always helped people transcending caste and religion, and Shiv Sena walks on those very values.” Kadam, who is a minister of state in the Maharashtra home department, said he came to Kashmir not to do politics but to give support to Shah’s family.
Shirsat said Shiv Sena is a party that keeps its word, as it fulfilled Shinde’s promise of help in building the house for Shah’s family.
On the occasion, Shah’s sister and brother, visibly moved, expressed their gratitude to Shinde.
“Eknath Shinde fulfilled the promise he had made. He provided us with financial help and also built us a home. This house is not just a shelter for us, it is honour and support,” they said. (Agencies)

BJP Delegation Meets EC, Seeks Stringent Action Against Kharge For ‘Terrorist’ Remark Targeting PM

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman speaks to the media after a high-level BJP delegation meeting with the Election Commission of India (ECI), at Nirvachan Sadan, in New Delhi.

NEW DELHI, Apr 22: A BJP delegation comprising three Union ministers, including Nirmala Sitharaman, approached the Election Commission on Wednesday, demanding “strictest action” against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for his “terrorist” remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sitharaman said, “Today, we appeared before the full commission to bring to its notice that no less a person than the president of the Congress and the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha has spoken in such condemnable words.
Kharge chose to call the prime minister a “terrorist” while addressing a press conference in Tamil Nadu, an election-bound state, the finance minister said, terming the Congress chief’s remark “outrageous”.
“It’s an insult to the mandate given by the people of India (to Prime Minister Modi). More importantly, it is an insult to the entire system where people choose their leader through elections, and once chosen, he is the leader for the entire country,” Sitharaman said.
She also alleged that the Congress is “completely frustrated” and making such remarks against the prime minister amid assembly polls in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal because of its “deep hatred” towards Modi.
“We have demanded that the Election Commission take the matter in all seriousness. We requested the poll panel to act firmly and sternly,” she said.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was also part of the delegation, termed the remark a “disgusting act” by Kharge.
“We have demanded the strictest action. We have also demanded that Kharge and the Congress be directed to apologise to the country,” Rijiju told reporters. He said the Commission gave a patient hearing to the BJP delegation and assured that it will take “appropriate action” in the matter.
“The Election Commission should take such action in the matter that nobody ever dares to call the country’s prime minister a terrorist. Everyone should learn a lesson. We hope the Election Commission will definitely take action,” the senior BJP leader said.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and BJP national general secretary Arun Singh were also part of the delegation.
The development followed after Kharge accused Prime Minister Modi of terrorising political parties and people by misusing government machinery and central agencies to stifle the opposition.
Addressing a press conference in Chennai, the Congress chief initially referred to the prime minister as a “terrorist” while criticising the AIADMK’s alliance with the BJP.
However, when pressed by reporters to clarify the context of the remark, the Congress chief said he meant the prime minister was “terrorising” the democratic fabric of the country.
“He is terrorising people and political parties. I never said he is a terrorist (in the literal sense). He is misusing his power and government machinery and abusing and maligning opposition parties,” Kharge said.
On Tuesday, the BJP had urged the Election Commission to take immediate cognisance of Kharge’s remark and direct the Congress president to submit a public apology.
In a memorandum to the poll panel, it also demanded that “suitable penal and regulatory proceedings” be initiated against Kharge for his remark under various sections of the BNS, and “appropriate campaign restrictions” be imposed on him.
The BJP also said that its delegations comprising Sitharaman, Rijiju and Meghwal will meet the EC on Wednesday to raise the issue. (Agencies)
