CM Omar Blames Negligence For Udhampur Bus Crash, Vows Action After Probe
UDHAMPUR, Apr 22: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday blamed negligence for the fatal road accident in Udhampur, saying preliminary findings point to lapses on the part of the bus operator, and assured that strict action will be taken once the inquiry report is submitted.
At least 21 people were killed and 51 others injured when an overcrowded passenger bus plunged nearly 100 metres down a hillside in Ramnagar area of Udhampur district on April 20.
Accompanied by Health Minister Sakeena Itoo, Abdullah visited Government Medical College (GMC) hospital Udhampur, where he met those injured in the road accident.
He interacted with their families, and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care with continuous monitoring.
The chief minister also assured full support to the affected families and emphasized the need for strict measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Talking to reporters, the chief minister said it is deeply unfortunate that many precious lives were lost but what makes it even more tragic is that the accident occurred due to the “negligence of the bus owner”.
“The person who was given control of the bus was not the regular driver; the actual driver was on leave. The owner handed over the steering to someone who had been driving a truck until recently. We cannot say that the government does not take action against such people. When we reviewed the record of this bus, it was found that more than 15 challans (fines) had already been issued against it,” the chief minister said.
He said the Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur Minga Sherpa has ordered an inquiry, and one of the senior officers is investigating the incident. “Let the investigation be completed; once the officer’s report comes, whatever recommendations are made in that report will be implemented,” the chief minister said.
Dismissing poor road conditions as a factor, he emphasised that reckless driving habits like overspeeding, overloading, and wrong-side driving remain a persistent challenge.
“The real challenge is that while roads can be improved, driver behaviour cannot be fixed overnight. Instances of wrong-side driving, overspeeding and overloading continue to put lives at risk,” he said.
While reaffirming the government’s commitment to accountability, Abdullah also stressed the need for responsibility among transport operators. He acknowledged the delicate balance authorities must maintain between enforcement and public demand for transport services. (Agencies)
“For Me, Ethics Hold More Weight Than Any Position”: Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung Resigns
Kathmandu [Nepal], Apr 22: Nepal’s Home Minister, Sudan Gurung, on Wednesday resigned from his post, citing moral responsibility and the need for a fair investigation into concerns raised over his financial holdings.
In a Facebook post announcing his resignation, Gurung said he had taken public criticism seriously and chose to step down to uphold ethical standards in public life.
“I, Sudan Gurung, have been performing my duties as the Home Minister with utmost honesty since Chaitra 13, 2082 (March 26, 2026). Recently, I have taken the questions, comments, and public concerns raised by citizens regarding my shares and related matters very seriously, ” he said.
Emphasising the importance of integrity, he said public trust must come before holding office.”For me, ethics hold more weight than any position, and there is no power greater than public trust. Today’s ‘Gen Z’ movement, which demands good governance, transparency, and accountability, carries the same message: public life must be clean and leadership must be accountable,” he said.
Gurung also referred to the broader political context and sacrifices made in the country’s past, saying accountability was essential when questions arise. “When questions are raised against a government built on the blood and sacrifice of my 46 brothers and sisters, the only answer is morality,” Gurung said.
Announcing his decision to step down, he said the move would ensure transparency and avoid any conflict of interest. He said, “Therefore, to ensure a fair investigation into the matters concerning me and to prevent any conflict of interest while holding office, I have resigned from the post of Home Minister effective today.
He urged the citizens, media, and youth to commit to honesty and accountability in public life. “I have fulfilled my moral responsibility. Now, I appeal to my dear media friends, all Nepali brothers and sisters, and the youth: if we truly desire change, we must all stand on the path of truth, honesty, and self-purification. Information regarding where certain media personnel hold ‘sweet shares’ will eventually come to light. Those who aspire for ‘Ram Rajya’ (ideal governance) must also possess the courage to sacrifice and show moral strength,” the former Nepali Home Minister said. (AGENCIES)

Pahalgam Terror Attack: Ponywallah Adil Shah’s Sacrifice Immortalised In History, Says Shinde

MUMBAI, Apr 22: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said that the sacrifice of ponywallah Syed Adil Hussain Shah, one of the 26 victims of last year’s Pahalgam terror attack, has been etched in history and will never be forgotten by the country.
On Tuesday, a newly built house was handed over to Shah’s family — an act Shinde described as honouring the brave heart’s sacrifice rather than merely providing shelter.
Shah, along with 25 tourists, lost his life in the attack by a group of terrorists in Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist spot, on April 22 last year.
He had tried to snatch a terrorist’s rifle during the attack and was shot dead. Following this, Shiv Sena head Shinde had given financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to his family and also promised a house for them.
On Tuesday, Shiv Sena ministers Yogesh Kadam and Sanjay Shirsat handed over the keys of the new house, named ‘Anand Nath Sadan’ in the memory of Shinde’s mentor Anand Dighe, to Shah’s family at his native Hapatnar village in Pahalgam.
“Adil was not merely a young man, he was a blazing lamp of the nation’s pride, one who sacrificed his life for humanity, transcending religion, language and creed,” the deputy CM said, attending the event through video conferencing. “A mother’s son, a family’s pillar, snatched away in an instant; but this sacrifice made for humanity will never be forgotten by the country; it has been etched in history,” he added.
Shinde also said he made every effort to safely evacuate tourists stranded in Srinagar after the terror attack last year and monitored the entire operation.
When local residents raised the demand for developing the area as a tourist zone, Shinde assured them that efforts would be made to take a positive decision in cooperation with the central government.
A large number of tourists from Maharashtra visit Kashmir, and special attention would be given to increasing this number further in the future, he added.
Shinde also recalled the legacy of party founder Bal Thackeray and said, “The late Balasaheb Thackeray always helped people transcending caste and religion, and Shiv Sena walks on those very values.” Kadam, who is a minister of state in the Maharashtra home department, said he came to Kashmir not to do politics but to give support to Shah’s family.
Shirsat said Shiv Sena is a party that keeps its word, as it fulfilled Shinde’s promise of help in building the house for Shah’s family.
On the occasion, Shah’s sister and brother, visibly moved, expressed their gratitude to Shinde.
“Eknath Shinde fulfilled the promise he had made. He provided us with financial help and also built us a home. This house is not just a shelter for us, it is honour and support,” they said. (Agencies)
