MUMBAI, Oct 21: Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt today announced that he has come out “victorious” from his cancer battle and thanked fans and well-wishers for their unwavering support in this journey.
The 61-year-old actor shared the news in a statement on Twitter on the occasion of his children’s birthday, Shaahran and Iqra who turned 10 today.
“The last few weeks were very difficult time for my family and me. But like they say, God gives the hardest battles to his strongest soldiers. And today, on the occasion of my kids’ birthday, I am happy to come out victorious from this battle and be able to give them the best gift I can. The health and well being of our family,” Sanjay Dutt said.
The news comes days after a family source said that the actor had responded “very well” to the medical treatment for cancer.
In August, Sanjay Dutt had announced that he would be taking a break from his professional commitments to focus on medical treatment, amid speculation that he was battling lung cancer.
The actor, in his statement, further thanked friends and family for being his source of strength.

I am eternally grateful to my family, friends and all the fans who have stood by me and been my source of strength through this trying time. Thank you for the love, kindness and the countless blessings that you have sent my way,” he said. “I am especially grateful to Dr Sewanti and her team of doctors, nurses and the medical staff at Kokilaben Hospital who have taken such good care of me in the last few weeks. Humbled and grateful,” he added.
The actor, who was last seen in “Sadak 2”, opened up about his cancer diagnosis for the first time last week in an Instagram video shared by celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim.

We want to finish on top of points table, says de Villiers

ABU DHABI, Oct 21: Experiencing one of their finest IPL seasons, Royals Challengers Bangalore’s batting maestro AB de Villiers says his team wants to top the points table on its way to the play-offs of the ongoing edition.

Ahead of their game against Kolkata Knight Riders, the RCB were placed at the number three spot on the points table with 12 points from nine matches.

Going into their latest match, the RCB recorded six wins and three defeats.

“There is definitely a mental edge that a team takes in finishing at the top, having been the most consistent team over 14 matches against the best teams in the IPL.

“So, we will definitely be focusing on that. We know that we will have to take it one hurdle at a time though,” the South African said in a video message uploaded by his franchise on its Twitter handle.

The supremely gifted cricketer has played some fine knocks for RCB this seasons, a couple of them single-handedly helping the team to victory.

“… With it, we can also send a message to the other teams that we are here to finish at the top of the table and to not just qualify for the playoffs. I really think we have the ability to do that,” the star batsman said.

De Villiers has been in ominous form and single-handedly won RCB the game against Rajasthan Royals with an unbeaten 55 from 22 balls in their 178-run chase last Saturday. He had also smashed a 33-ball 73 in the first-leg game against Kolkata night Riders. (PTI)

Transfers ordered by SKUAST-K VC revoked

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar, Oct 21: The Government has put a moratorium on transfers, promotions and recruitments in SKUAST-K till the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor of the Varsity and revoked the recent orders of the Vice Chancellor.
The order of the moratorium was issued yesterday by the Government (Vide order No. LGS-I (GR) 20/9480 dated 20.10.2020) as the Vice Chancellor is retiring tomorrow. The moratorium has been put on the transfers, selection, recruitments, promotion and CAS exercise till the new Vice Chancellor is appointed as per the provisions of the SKUAST Act.
A memo issued by the SKUAST-K (No. AU/Adm/AR(T)/2020/8222-52 dated 21.10.2020) today put moratorium on the exercise of screening of applications for determining eligibility for direct recruitment by selection (teaching and non-teaching) and also screening-cum-Evaluation for determining eligibility for placement/promotion under CAS for scientists/ teachers-2006, initiated through various orders/ communications.
The moratorium was issued after several transfer orders were issued by VC Professor Nazir Ahmad at a time when he was about to retire.
The Government last week constituted a selection committee for drawing a panel of names for the appointment of VC for SKUAST-K.
Earlier, the SSTA had appealed the Government for immediate issuance of the notification for the appointment of New Vice-Chancellor for SKUAST-Kashmir as the incumbent VC SKUAST-K is completing his term of 5 years on 22nd of this month.
The VC made several transfers of mostly scientists recently at the time when his term is expiring. The SSTA alleged that these transfers were made by the VC to target the members of the Association who are raising genuine issues.
The VC has even transferred four scientists two each from Kashmir to Ladakh and vice versa without taking approval from competent authority. He was supposed to take approval for transferring scientists from one Union Territory to another.
Those transferred include Dr Feroz Din Sheikh, Associate Professor posted at Manasbal to Leh, Dr PK Singh, Assistant Professor posted at Shalimar to Leh.
He had also transferred Dr Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor posted at Leh to Shalimar in place of Dr PK Singh. Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Wani who was posted in Leh was also transferred and posted at Shalimar campus of the University.
According to an order issued by Government of J&K (No. 22-JK (GAD) of 2020 dated 30-09-2020), the employees serving in Ladakh and J&K UTs can be transferred from one UT to another by the LG. “All such orders without the approval of the competent authority are not legally tenable”, read the order.

Wake up call for us, we should take more responsibility: Iyer

DUBAI, Oct 21: It’s a wake up call, said Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer as he urged his team’s batsmen, with the exception of an in-form Shikhar Dhawan, to take “more responsibility” following a surprise IPL loss to Kings XI Punjab here.

Delhi Capitals lost by five wickets after putting 164/5 on the board. Opener Dhawan continued to be in great form and his sequence of scores now read 69 not out, 57, 101 not out, and 106 not out, the last one coming in a losing cause.

“This is like a wake-up call for us. Going forward we are going to face tough situations and tougher teams. We have played amazing cricket in the past but we have to leave that in the past,” Iyer said at the post-match virtual press conference.

“We have to come out all guns blazing, play with freedom and take more responsibility. We need one match to qualify and keeping that in mind, we will take one match at a time,” he added.

Against KXIP, Dhawan alone scored 106 while the quintet comprising Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Marcus Stoinis, Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer contributed 54 runs collectively.

“I am really happy for Shikhar Dhawan for the way he is going. He is creating an amazing platform for us as batsmen. We should be knowing our roles pretty well,” the DC skipper said.

However, he feels that his batsmen are in a good frame of mind and the defeat was a one off setback.

“Other than that, I feel all the batsmen are in really good frame of mind and few matches can go wrong here and there as fatigue creeps in. Keeping that aside we need to focus on our strengths,” he said.

Iyer didn’t blame the Dubai track as he felt that it played the same in both innings.

Asked about what Dhawan is doing that others aren’t able to do, Iyer spoke about clarity of mind and planning.

“The wicket played same in both innings. The way Shikhar is batting, his mindset has been amazing, it has been great throughout and he needs that quick start that keeps him going.

“The way he planned was amazing and we just need these sort of innings from him everyday. So, little bit of partnership in Power-Play from our openers (Prithvi Shaw) and we will get a big one.”

Iyer conceded that 26 runs off the fifth over bowled by Tushar Deshpande really changed the momentum in KXIP’s favour.

“The fifth over of the Power-Play definitely changed the momentum towards them but other than that we really played hard and took the game to the last run,” he said.

“We missed some run-outs and catches but that’s part and parcel of the game. We will do hardwork at our training in next few days.”

Deshpande, Iyer’s Mumbai Ranji Trophy teammate, was taken to cleaners by Chris Gayle, who hit him for three fours and two sixes in an over.

“Deshpande is a confident lad and does his homework pretty well. He has been hit by Chris Gayle, who is a world-class batsman and it’s a great learning experience for him.

“He will go back and analyse his mistakes and come back stronger. I believe in him,” the skipper said rallying behind his under-fire bowler. (PTI)

Farmers not getting MSP in UP : Priyanka

NEW DELHI, Oct 21: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today attacked the BJP-led government at the Centre over the new farm laws and alleged that farmers in Uttar Pradesh were forced to sell paddy at a rate lower than the minimum support price.
Taking to Twitter, she also posted a video of a farmer alleging corruption in crop procurement at the Mohammadi Khiri mandi.
“The BJP Government is holding a Government Khat Sammelan over the bills which are against the interest of the farmers, but is not listening to the pain of the farmers,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
“In almost all the places in UP, farmers are forced to sell their paddy crops at Rs 1,000 to 1,100 per quintal, about Rs 800 less than the Rs 1,868 per quintal MSP,” she said.
This is when there is a guarantee for MSP, think what will happen when this guarantee is not there, she added.
Her attack on the Government comes a day after the Punjab Assembly adopted a resolution rejecting the Centre’s new farm laws and passed four bills that it said will counter the contentious legislation enacted by Parliament.
The three farm bills — the Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 — were passed by Parliament recently. Subsequently, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bills. The Congress, many other opposition parties and several farmers organisations have been protesting against these legislations, claiming that these will harm the interests of farmers and benefit corporates, a claim denied by the Government. The Centre has asserted that these new laws will be beneficial for farmers and will increase their income. (PTI)

This season Shami has lot more clarity about his role as senior bowler: KL Rahul

DUBAI, Oct 21: The ever-reliable Mohammed Shami has bowled with a lot more “clarity of mind” in the ongoing IPL, which has helped him deliver near-perfect performances this season, feels Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul.

Shami, a world-class Test bowler, has been in his elements, taking 16 wickets for KXIP in 10 matches so far and played a big role in the last three games that the team has won.

“Look we all know that what Shami can do on a given day. He has been doing that for many years now. I think this year, there is a lot more clarity and he has put his hand up as a senior bowler,” Rahul said after KXIP beat Delhi Capitals by five wickets to keep their campaign for Play-offs on track here on Tuesday.

The KXIP skipper believes that when seniors perform, juniors take inspiration and that’s what is happening thanks to Shami’s efforts.

“It is important that internationals across teams put their hands up. That makes the team lot better and youngsters can feed off that,” he said.

“You start winning a lot of games and it’s great to see Shami doing really well and touchwood the ball is coming out of his hand as perfectly as ever. Hopefully he can get more wickets for the team and keep bowling the way he is bowling,” Rahul added.

Glenn Maxwell also raised hopes of being back to form with a 24-ball 32, something that augurs well for the team, feels the skipper.

“Well, it’s important for the team and individual as well…It’s important that the team backs its match-winners. We know what Maxwell can do. When he comes good, he gives a lot of solidity to the team. He balances it out and is a great team-man.

“To have Maxi in form is a great thing and it has eased his nerves as well. He has played a lot of cricket for a long time and he knew what he needed to do,” Rahul said.

Rahul hailed the hard work put in by his team after a string of losses.

“If all of that comes together every game, I will be sitting here with a big smile. It’s important that guys who haven’t found their form find some form and good that lot of things are falling in place,” he said.

“The work put behind the scenes by the boys and the coaches is slowly starting to show. Hopefully, we can build from here and learn from our mistakes. Go forward with more confidence.”

KXIP has now beaten all top three teams — Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals — in their last three games.

“It feels really good. We are at that stage of the tournament where we need to beat every team that we face. It’s important that we take one game at a time and if we keep trusting ourselves, it doesn’t matter who you are playing against,” said Rahul. (PTI)

Amazed at doubled standards of SAD & AAP: CM

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh today cornered the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over their ”double standards” with regard to the three Amendment Bills, which they had criticised publicly hours after supporting them in the Assembly.
The Chief Minister said he was amazed that they spoke in favour of the Bills in the Assembly, and even went with him to meet the Governor, but said different things outside. Talking to mediapersons after the House was adjourned sine die, he pointed out that the farmers had not said anything against the Bills, which were designed to safeguard their interests and those of the state’s agriculture.
It was more than clear that these parties were not interested in securing the future of the farmers or protecting the state’s agriculture and economy, the Chief Minister said, slamming SAD and AAP for playing to the galleries by pretending to back the Bills in the Assembly yesterday. Their lack of sincerity towards the farmers’ cause had been totally exposed by their statements thereafter, he said.
“If they thought we (I and my government) were fooling the people of Punjab, why did they not say so in the House? Why did they support and vote for our Bills?” asked Captain Amarinder, reacting to SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia and AAP leadership’s statements. They had both accused the Chief Minister of misleading the people, citing his remarks on the possibility of the Governor/President not signing the Bills.
“If I had to fool the people why would I honestly share with them my apprehensions? Why would I openly talk about the possible scenarios instead of feeding them with a whole bunch of lies, as the Akalis and AAP are used to doing?” Captain Amarinder asked.
Both the Opposition parties had shown their true colours by trying to undermine the state government’s pro-farmer initiatives, which they had ostensibly backed in the House, said the Chief Minister, referring to the media/social media comments of Akali and AAP leaders.
He pointed out that these Opposition leaders had criticised his Government’s efforts to save the farmers soon after joining his government in passing a Resolution rejecting the central farm laws along with Bills to negate the same, and even going to Governor with him to submit copies to him. “Clearly they have no shame left,” he added.
Captain Amarinder said, in response to a question, that other parties, especially AAP which had a government in Delhi, should also bring in legislations siilar to those of Punjab to negate the dangerous effects of the central farm laws. Arvind Kejriwal should follow Punjab’s example, he said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that he does not care if the Centre dismisses his government but he would fight to protect the rights of the farmers till his last breath. “If Centre things I have done something wrong they can dismiss me, I am not afraid I have resigned twice earlier and can do it again,” he said in response to a question.
There are plenty of legal options, the Chief Minister remarked while replying to a question, but expressed the optimism that the Governor will fulfill his responsibility by listening to Punjab’s people. The voice of Punjab had reached the Governor and he will send the Bills to the President of India, said Captain Amarinder, adding that the latter could not ignore the sentiments and appeal of the state.
Earlier, in the House today, the Chief Minister waved copies of newspapers quoting Majithia on the issue, and quipped “these people say one thing in Assembly and another outside.” With this kind of behaviour, people will start doubting the integrity of politicians, he warned.
Meanwhile, in his media interaction, Captain Amarinder said, while responding to a question, that he was happy that Navjot Singh Sidhu came to the House yesterday and spoke well. (UNI)

Minister appeals to Delhiites to switch off vehicle engines at traffic signals to fight pollution

NEW DELHI, Oct 21: Delhi’s vehicular pollution can be reduced by 15-20 per cent if commuters turn off their vehicle engines while waiting at traffic signals, city Environment Minister Gopal Rai said today.
Kickstarting the 26-day “Red Light On, Gaadi Off” campaign in the national capital from the ITO traffic signal, Rai appealed to the people of Delhi to act responsibly and stop burning fuel at traffic signals.
“The campaign is an attempt to reduce vehicular pollution. Delhi has around one crore registered vehicles. Altogether, vehicles burn fuel at traffic signals for around 15-20 minutes every day. This campaign aims to stop fuel-burning at signals.
“If the city’s two crore population joins this campaign and does its bit, then we can reduce around 15-20 per cent pollution from vehicles. This campaign is voluntary. I appeal to the people of Delhi to make it a success,” he said.
The Aam Admi Party (AAP) government’s campaign, which will go on till November 15, aims to spread ground-level awareness at 100 traffic signals in the capital. A total of 2,500 civil defence volunteers will be standing with placards, asking commuters to switch off the engines of their vehicles, at these signals.
Launching the initiative at the ITO intersection, Rai gave a flower to a commuter while requesting him to turn off the engine of his car.
He said Delhi can become pollution-free only if the government and the public work together.
“We have started the ‘Red Light On, Gaadi Off’ campaign today in Delhi. So far, the Delhi government and other agencies have been working to control pollution. But now, Delhi’s population of two crore people is being made a part of it to fulfil their responsibility in the fight against pollution. To make Delhi pollution-free, the government and the public must come together to fight it,” Rai told reporters.
Civil defence volunteer Geeta, a resident of Sadar Bazar, said she received a good response from the commuters, who are turning their vehicle engines off when asked to do so.
“The response is very good till now. People are switching off their engines when we are asking them. No one argued or refused to do so,” she said.
Another volunteer, Himanshu Wadhwa, a resident of Burari, said people were acting responsibly.
“We have noticed that people are aware about the deteriorating situation of pollution in the national capital. Many of them are already switching off their engines. They understand their responsibility,” he said.
The civil defence volunteers will spread awareness among people at the traffic signals from 8 am to 8 pm, Rai said.
The initiative is only an awareness drive and nobody will be issued a “challan”, the minister had said on Tuesday. (PTI)
