I have been patient for good roles: Manav Kaul

Mumbai, Jan 3: Actor Manav Kaul says he always takes a year-long break before starting a new project as he believes right opportunities come to those who are “extremely patient”.
The 44-year-old actor first rose to fame with his turn as a right-wing politician in the 2013 drama “Kai Po Che!” and got further acclaim for his performances in films like “Jolly LLB 2” and “Tumhari Sulu”.
In an interview with PTI, Kaul said the key to consistently doing good work is not about going on a signing spree.
“When you do a good film or give a performance which people really like, the repercussions is that all the writers and directors want to cast you in the same role. That you’ve be patient enough to nicely refuse and wait for the right opportunity.
“I always take that gap… Of a year to do my next. You have to be extremely patient. You can’t just be on a signing spree. I have to put my heart and soul into it and be passionately invested in a project.”
For Kaul, even the love and appreciation that came his way for “Tumhari Sulu” — in which he played Ashok, the supportive husband to Vidya Balan’s Sulu, an aspiring radio jockey — didn’t entice him to be part of more films.
“I again went on a break, but then suddenly interesting scripts started coming. You’ll see a lot of good stuff coming out in 2021 across OTT and films,” the actor, who made his digital debut with 2018’s Netflix horror series “Ghoul”, said.
“I am lucky I have been patient for good roles. Today I feel more fortunate that people have started considering me in a lead role and think I can pull off a film or a series,” he added.
The actor’s latest release is “Nail Polish”, a courtroom mystery drama, in which he stars as Veer Singh, a man embroiled in the allegation of murder of children.
Kaul said when director Bugs Bhargava Krishna narrated the script to him over a Zoom call during the coronavirus-induced lockdown, he thought he wouldn’t be able to pull off such a “layered” character.
“The script was stunning. But I felt it was incredibly tough and thought I won’t be able to do it. I just didn’t know how to perform it. (But) Bugs had complete faith in me. So when we started the rehearsals, I kept reading the script which was so well researched.
“I asked a lot of questions about my character and kept talking about him with my director to truly understand him. In the end, it worked. This (project) was something that I was craving for,” he added.
The ZEE5 Original film also stars Arjun Rampal, Rajit Kapur, and Anand Tiwari. (agencies)

Fresh snowfall closes highway in J&K, Board exams postponed

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education on Sunday postponed today’s mathematics paper of the ongoing Class 11 annual regular examination in view of snowfall across Kashmir Valley.
An official of JKBOSE, while confirming the postponement of today’s paper said that new date for the exam will be notified separately.

Every farmer-labourer part of movement a ‘satyagrahi’, they will take back their rights: Rahul

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday compared the ongoing farmers’ protests against the three new Central agriculture-related laws with the Champaran agitation during the British rule, and said every farmer-labourer part of the current movement is a ‘satyagrahi’ and they will take their rights back.
“The country is going to face a Champaran-like tragedy. British were ‘company Bahadur’ back then and now Modi-friends are ‘company Bahadur’,” Gandhi alleged in a tweet in Hindi.
“But, every farmer-labourer of the movement is a ‘satyagrahi’ who will take back their rights,” the former Congress chief said.
The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 was led by Mahatma Gandhi and is considered a historic event in India’s independence movement.
It was a farmer’s uprising that took place in Champaran district of Bihar during the British colonial period when the farmers protested having to grow indigo with barely any payment for it.
The Congress has been seeking the repeal of the three new farm laws, alleging that they will ruin farming and the farmers. The Congress is also supporting the farmers’ agitation against the legislations.
After the sixth round of formal negotiations on Wednesday, the government and farm unions reached some common ground to resolve protesting farmers’ concerns over rise in power tariff and penalties for stubble burning, but the two sides remained deadlocked over the main contentious issues of the repeal of three farm laws and a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP).
Braving the cold, thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, are protesting at various borders of the national capital for more than a month against these laws.
The government has presented these laws as major agriculture sector reforms aimed at helping farmers and increasing their income, but the protesting unions fear that the new legislations will leave them at the mercy of big corporates by weakening the MSP and mandi systems. (AGENCIES)

Bed-ridden for 15 years, 65-year-old from J-K bags ”best house construction” award under PMAY

JAMMU Bed-ridden for the last 15 years, a 65-year-old man from Bhadarwah in Jammu and Kashmir”s Doda district was among three residents of the Union Territory who recently received the ”best construction award” under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
Abdul Latief Ganai expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said “the scheme came as a blessing in disguise for his family”.
Modi and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri awarded the ”best construction award” under PMAY to Ganai through video conferencing on Friday.
The awardee was joined by Doda Deputy Commissioner Sagar Dattaray Doifode, Bhadarwah Municipal Committee Executive Officer Yusaf-Ul-Umar and other officials at the mini secretariat in Doda.
During the video conference, Modi talked about the scheme that started in June 2015 and the number of beneficiaries from poor and middle-class families.
Out of total 88 beneficiaries selected for the best construction award from the country, three belonged to Jammu and Kashmir — one each from Samba, Ramgarh and Bhadarwah.
“Due to my prolonged illness, I had to sell everything I had and lived in one room with my wife and two sons but the scheme came as a big relief to my family,” Ganai said.
Hailing from Ward 10 of Tharra Mohalla locality of Bhadarwah town, Ganai used to work at a small cloth shop but a severe slip disc left him bed ridden for 15 years and bankrupt.
“The scheme came as a blessing in disguise for my family as today we are living in our own pucca house and also have been awarded for the best construction by the prime minister himself,” the villager said.
His 24-year-old son Nadeem Latief, who recently completed his post graduation in history, also joined his father at Doda during the video conference and felt elated while his father”s name was being announced for the best construction award.
“We have seen very difficult times as for years me and my brother used to spend nights with our cousins or at a friend”s place as we have only one room, but now we have our own roof for which we are thankful to the prime minister,” Nadeem said.
The executive officer of Bhadarwah municipal committee appreciated the efforts of the Ganai family and said they constructed the house as per guidelines and “now they have been awarded for their honesty and dedication which is a matter of pride for us as well”.
“I hope all the beneficiaries will get inspiration from Ganai as in Bhadarwah town a total of 330 homes have been sanctioned under PMAY Urban, out of which 200 are under construction and 47 have been already completed,” Yusaf-Ul-Umar said.
Under the Economically weaker Sections (EWS) scheme, each beneficiary is given Rs 1.66 lakh to build his or her house. (AGENCY)

Approval for vaccines accelerates India’s journey to be COVID-free: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Hailing the approval given to two coronavirus vaccines as a “decisive turning point” in the spirited fight against the pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that this will accelerate the process for India to become a COVID-free nation.
In a series of tweets after the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) approved Oxford’s vaccine Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for restricted emergency use, Modi said it will make every Indian proud that both the vaccines are made in India.
“This shows the eagerness of our scientific community to fulfil the dream of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, at the root of which is care and compassion,” he said, congratulting the nation, scientists and innovators.
He once again extended his gratitude to doctors, medical staff, scientists, police personnel, sanitation workers and all ‘Corona warriors’ for the outstanding work they have done in adverse circumstances, and said the nation will remain eternally grateful to them for saving many lives.
“A decisive turning point to strengthen a spirited fight! DCGI granting approval to vaccines of @SerumInstIndia and @BharatBiotech accelerates the road to a healthier and COVID-free nation. Congratulations India. Congratulations to our hardworking scientists and innovators,” he tweeted.
The Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, has tied up with Oxford-AstraZeneca to manufacture Covishield.
Covaxin has been indigenously developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The approval by the DCGI was given on the basis of recommendations submitted by a COVID-19 subject expert committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). (AGENCIES)

Rain washes out India’s practice session at MCG on Sunday

Melbourne: The Indian team’s practice session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was on Sunday cancelled due to rain and the players were forced to train indoors.
In the absence of outdoor activities, the players had a gym session as they continued their preparations for the third Test starting in Sydney from January 7.
“India’s practice session today at the MCG has been cancelled due to rain,” the BCCI said in a statement.
Both the Indian and Australian players are scheduled to leave for Sydney on Monday.
On Saturday, Cricket Australia said that five India Test players, including vice-captain Rohit Sharma, have been placed in isolation and an investigation launched into a possible breach of COVID-19 bio-security protocol.
This was after a fan put out a video of the players sitting inside an indoor restaurant on Twitter on Friday. The BCCI brass had initially ruled out any investigation after reports of a possible breach first appeared in the media here, but CA later said a joint probe is on.
The four-match series is levelled at 1-1 after India won by eight wickets at the MCG after losing the day/night Test in Adelaide. (agencies)

Sourav Ganguly stable, decision on further angioplasty soon

Kolkata: BCCI president and former India Captain Sourav Ganguly, who underwent angioplasty after a “mild” heart attack, is stable and his health parameters are normal, doctors said on Sunday.
He was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries on Saturday, following which a stent was inserted in one to remove the blockage.
“He had an uneventful last night and presently Afebrile (not feverish)… He is sleeping now,” a bulletin issued by the private hospital where Ganguly is admitted, said.
The celebrated former cricketer’s blood pressure is 110/70 and oxygen saturation level is 98 per cent, it said.
Doctors said they will be deciding on conducting another angioplasty after accessing Ganguly’s condition.
“He will be requiring another angioplasty because of the triple vessel disease. But, that depends on how his condition is. He is, however, out of danger now,” one of the doctors treating Ganguly had said on Saturday.
A routine ECG will also be conducted on Sunday morning, the bulletin said.
The batting great was rushed to hospital on Saturday afternoon following complaints of chest pain. (agencies)
