NYC volunteers call off Hhunger strike

SRINAGAR, June 5: Following the intervention and assurance from Devinder Singh Rana, Political Advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that the State Government is in constant touch with Central Government over the extension of contracts to National Youth Corps (NYC) volunteers, the volunteers this evening called off their nine day old hunger strike.
A delegation of the NYC volunteers called on Rana and projected their demands. Rana told the delegation that the State Government has taken up demand for extension of NYC volunteers vigorously with the Union Ministry of Youth Services and Sports.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner-Srinagar, Baseer Khan has asked the NYC volunteers of the Srinagar district to resume their duties on June 6 despite the fact that contracts of hundreds of NYC volunteers are ending on Wednesday.
Talking to Excelsior, Mudasir Hassan, President Jammu and Kashmir National Youth Corps Volunteers Association (JKNYCVA) said that Political Advisor to Chief Minister; Devinder Singh Rana called them up and asked them to end their hunger strike.
Mudasir said that Rana called up Union Youth Services and Sports Minister, Ajay Maken on telephone and enquired from him the status of the extension of the contracts of NYC volunteers. He said that State’s Youth Services and Sports Minister, Rajinder Singh Chib also told them to end the hunger strike since the matter has already been taken up with the Central Government.
“We don’t want any confrontation with the State Government and we are ready to give them some time in fulfilling our demands. We are demanding extension of our contracts and hopefully the orders in this regard would be issued soon. We have decided to call off the hunger strike and the volunteers should join their duties from tomorrow,” said Mudasir
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Baseer Khan sent an emissary to the protesting volunteers and asked the Srinagar district volunteers to join their duties on Wednesday.
