JAMMU, Apr 5: National Secular Forum (NSF), University unit organized a program in University Campus on the birth anniversary of Jagjivan Ram who laid his life for the country.
Dr Vikas Sharma Coordinator Jammu district and Zonal secretary JKNC was the chief guest while TR Sharma (Retd KAS) presided over the function. Vikshay Vashist, State secretary NSF was the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Vikas appreciated the initiative taken by the University Unit NSF to celebrate the birth anniversary of those who have contributed their lives for the Country.
He said that Jagjivan Ram, popularly known as Babuji was a national leader, a freedom fighter, a crusader of social justice, a champion of depressed classes, an outstanding Parliamentarian, a true democrat, a distinguished Union Minister, an able administrator and an exceptionally gifted orator.
Jagjivan Ram was born in a small village, Chandwa in Shahabad District, now Bhojpur, in Bihar on 5 April, 1908. On 19 October, 1935, Babuji appeared before the Hammond Commission at Ranchi and demanded, for the first time, voting rights for the Dalits. He played a very active and crucial role in the freedom struggle.
Inspired by Gandhi Babuji courted arrest on 10 December, 1940. After his release, he entrenched himself deeply into the Civil Disobedience Movement and Satyagraha. Babuji was arrested again on 19 August, 1942, for his active participation in the Quit India Movement of INC.
TR Sharma said Babuji started his career as a student activist and freedom fighter. His nomination to the Bihar Legislative Council in 1936 made him a lawmaker at the age of 28. He served in the Indian Government under Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi in a number of significant positions, including Minister of Communications and Minister of Labour. He was India’s Defence Minister during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. He served as a Member of Parliament for 50 consecutive years, setting a record.
Vikshay Vashist, State Secretary NSF also spoke on the occasion. Gourav Partap Singh president University Unit delivered the welcome address, Abhishek Uppal delivered vote of thanks.
