JAMMU, June 28: The National Secular Forum has accused the Jammu University of adopting pick and choose in hiring services of private lawyers as its Standing Councils by  ignoring the resolutions of  decision making  JU Syndicate and the University Council.
Addressing a press conference, here today, NSF State president Dr Vikas Sharma alleged that the hiring of the service of a private lawyer as Need Based Standing Counsel was  clear cut violation of the norms as the person was engaged without following any due procedure as recommended by the 109th University Syndicate vide Item No. 109.61 (e),  which states that the  Vice Chancellors of both, JU and KU will get the name(s) of senior and reputed Advocate(s) out of list which shall be submitted to the  Chancellor to obtain his approval and thereafter the contract of service will be entered with such Advocate(s) who shall be empanelled from the list so submitted initially for a period of three years, further extendable by another two years.
Further, he added,  the Item No: 80.36 (e) of 80th University Council resolved  the need to revisit the existing panel of Legal Counsels of both the Universities and desirability of engaging the services of reputed legal firms having Advocates of long standing and reputation on their rolls.
Citing these resolutions, the NSF leader alleged that the university delayed the procedure and went ahead with appointment on personal choice, which amounts to contempt and deserves reprimand from the higher ups.  Pointing out that more than 400 cases of varsity were pending in different courts, he alleged that the incharge Legal Officer of JU was instigating Varsity higher ups to approach courts even on trivial matters involving students and scholars thus increasing the number of case.
Dr Vikas demanded that panel of Advocates listed, if any, by the Universities must have Advocate(s) with high reputation and untarnished image.
