Notorious criminal killed in police action

JAMMU, Apr 26: A notorious criminal died during a police action after he and his associate allegedly opened fire on a police party at a naka in the Miran Sahib area here late on Sunday night.
Officials said acting on specific intelligence about the movement of the accused, a special team of Police Station Miran Sahib laid a trap near the naka point.

During checking, they said the accused, identified as Abhineet Singh, a member of the Nagi gang, and a history-sheeter wanted in more than 13 FIRs, involving attempt to murder, rioting and arms smuggling, arrived on a motorcycle along with an associate.
When challenged, the duo allegedly tried to break the naka and opened fire on the police team, officials said.
In retaliation and self-defence, police fired back, they said, adding that both accused abandoned the motorcycle and tried to flee under the cover of darkness.
However, officials said that police chased them and later found Abhineet Singh in an injured condition in a canal. His associate, however, managed to escape from the spot.
Officials said Singh was accordingly shifted to Government Medical College Jammu for treatment, where, as per police and hospital sources, he succumbed to his injuries.
His body has also been shifted to the mortuary for conducting the post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, a hunt has been launched to nab the absconding accused.
