Non-migrant Sikhs demand OBC status

JAMMU, Dec 3: Sikh Progressive Front (SPF) has demanded OBC status for the non-migrant Sikhs of Kashmir.
A deputation of the Front, under the chairmanship of its president, Balvinder Singh alongwith Manjit Singh, general secretary and others met the Chairman, J&K Socially & Economically Backward  Classes Commission (J&K) today and pleaded for inclusion of non-migrant Sikhs of Kashmir in the OBC category.
The deputation further informed that the employment package which was started by the Union Government in 2009 for  Kashmiri migrants, was later extended to non-migrant Kashmiris also  but when State Government in 2017 extended the said benefits to non-migrant Kashmiris it brought SRO 425 amending the rules of SRO 412 and added a clause stating that `Non Migrant Kashmiris’ mean “Kashmiri Pandits” and debarred the Sikh youth of Kashmir in the process.
They said recently a notification was issued by All India Council of Technical Education, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, dated 06.10.2020 for giving special concession to the wards of Kashmiri migrants and Kashmiri Pandits/Kashmiri Hindu families (Non Migrant) living in Kashmir for admission in higher education institutions throughout the country, depriving youth belonging to Sikh community of Kashmir.
SPF urged upon the Commission to include  non-migrant Sikhs of Kashmir valley  in Other Backward Classes category (OBC).
