No respite from chilly condition in Kashmir, Kargil records coldest night at minus 7 deg

 

SRINAGAR: There is still no respite from cold weather conditions in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, where the border town of Kargil recorded the coldest night of the season so far after mercury dipped and settled at minus 7 degree Celsius.

Even though there was a marginal improvement in the night temperature in Leh in Ladakh, it was still the coldest place in the state. After recording the coldest night of the season so far at minus 8.2 degree yesterday, the mercury soared and settled at minus 8 degree in Leh.

A Met department spokesperson said weather will remain dry in all the three regions, Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh regions, during the next four days.

He said Kargil recorded the coldest night of the season so far after mercury settled at minus 7 degree. However, yesterday the night temperature of this border town was not available with the Met department. Before this, the coldest night in Kargil was recorded on November 17 as the mercury dipped and settled at minus 6.1 degree.

Even though the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg witnessed some improvement in the night temperature, it was still the coldest place in the Valley. Against minus 3.6 degree recorded yesterday, the temperature was minus 2.3 degree, which is still over one notch below normal.

The world famous health resort of Pahalgam also witnessed some improvement in the night temperature, but it was still below normal. The temperature recorded in Pahalgam was minus 1.5 degree, against minus 2.9 degree.          People in the summer capital, Srinagar, woke up to a sunny morning though the weather was still chilly due to ice cold winds. The summer capital witnessed a marginal dip in the night temperature as the mercury plunged and settled at minus 0.6 degree, against minus 0.8 degree recorded yesterday.

The spokesperson said the night temperature in Quazigund, the gateway to Valley, also witnessed a marginal dip. Against 0.6 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature was 0.2 degree.

Another health resort of Kokernag witnessed improvement in the night temperature while Kupwara in north Kashmir witnessed a dip in the mercury. Kokergan recorded 2.1 degree, against 1.8 degree, while Kupwara witnessed minus 0.4 degree, against 0.4 degree. (UNI)
