No proposal to enhance wages of sweepers

Srinagar, June 10: Government today said there is no proposal under its consideration to enhance the wages of Safai Karamcharis.
In a written reply to a question of MLC Charanjit Singh, the Minister Incharge Housing and Urban Development Depart-ment, said at this point no proposal of enhancing wages of Safai Karamcharis of Municipal Corporations in the State is under consideration of the Government.
He said a total of 4855 Safai Karamcharis are working in the State out of which 2337 work in Jammu Municipal Corporation and 2518 in Srinagar Municipal Corporation. The Minister said these Karamcharis are provided with requisite equipments and gadgets when they are deployed for cleaning sewers/roads and collection of solid waste.
The Minister further informed that Safai Karamcharis of Jammu Municipal Corporation are covered under LIC policy named ‘Aam Aadmi Bima Yojna’. “As per the policy in the event of an accident during the cleaning, the permanent Safai Karamchari is provided with Rs. 75000 in case of death and also in case of permanent/total disability due to accident (loss of two eyes or two limbs),” he added.
He said in case of partial disability due to accident (loss of one eye or one limb) the victim is provided Rs. 37500. “In addition to this an ex-gratia relief amounting to Rs. 10,000 is provided to the nominee of deceased out of Municipal resources”, he added.
With regard to Safai Karamcharis of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, the Minister said that the SMC is working in a plan with State Life Insurance Corporation to cover all Safai Karamcharis against the health and accident risks. “A Municipal Welfare Fund has been raised by way of mutual monthly contribution to provide adequate financial assistance to the victims in such eventualities,” he added.
