No power generation at Thein dam for 8 days

KATHUA, Aug 9: The power generation at  Ranjit Sagar Hydel Power Project (Thein dam) has been suspended for the last eight days as due to breach in a protection  bund of  Thein nallah, the flood and muddy water has entered a portion of transmission unit of the project, leading to stoppage of the three turbines.
Sources said that this happened eight days back and the Thein Dam Project authorities were tight lipped over it. A large portion of  Thein nallah protection bund on  J&K side got breached due to flash flood and heavy rain. There after the slush, mud and flood water entered the portion of a transmission unit room leading to damage to the unit.
Due to this the turbines came to a grinding halt and there was no power generation in the project over river Ravi in Basohli area.
Executive Engineer, Power Generation Wing at Ranjit Sagar  Hydel Project, R L Mittal, when contacted, confirmed that three turbines’ installed having capacity to generate 450 MW power per day, have come to halt with the damage caused to a portion of the project  due to recent rains and flood from a seasonal nallah at Thein.  He said a special type of oil imported from outside is required for the repair work and running the turbines. The order has been placed for the same.
Mr Mittal further disclosed that one turbine will be made functional within next two days, second in next four days and third,  two days after that. He said by next week the project would start work to its generation capacity while massive loss has been suffered due to suspension of power generation. He however, maintained that J&K continued to get its share of 12 % power from the `pool’.
