No immediate flood threat in Kashmir

SRINAGAR : There was no immediate flood threat, though the water level in the river Jhelum has witnessed increase as compared to yesterday due to fresh rain during the past 24 hours in the Kashmir valley.
However, the water level was still about three feet to seven feet below normal.
The weather was dry since this morning and sun was playing hide and seek though icy cold winds continued.    An official of Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) told UNI that water level was increasing in Jhelum though it was below danger mark.
He said at 0900 hrs, the water level in Jhelum at Sangam, in Pulwama on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was 14.25 feet, about seven feet below danger mark.     However, it was up by 0.15 from 0800 hrs.    At Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar, the water level at 0900 hrs was

He said at Asrham in Bandipora, the water level at 0900 hrs was 11.08 feet which was about three feet below danger mark.    He said the water level will witness further increase during the next few hours as rain water from hills and catchment areas will also drop into river Jhelum. But there is no immediate threat of flood.
However, there is a forecast for more heavy rain during the next 24 hours which was cause of concern.    The NDRF teams which were rushed from outside the state to the Valley have already reached to their place of operation in case of flood as the authorities have not yet withdrawn the flood threat.
Jammu and Kashmir police personnel and engineers of different departments remained deployed on the river bunds to keep a close watch on the situation.
The Army has also alerted troops to be ready to meet any eventuality in the valley in case of flood.  (AGENCIES)
