No COVID positive inmate in J&K prisons

JAMMU, Apr 30: Prisons in Jammu and Kashmir are making all the necessary arrangements and putting all the required efforts to check the COVID-19 pandemic among the inmates.
Sources in Prisons Department informed that all the new arrivals are accepted only with a COVID negative certificate.
They informed that if some COVID positive case comes then that person is taken on prison rolls but is sent to Government Medical College with guard till he/she becomes negative.
“Even the negative case on arrival is put on mandatory quarantine,” they maintained adding that the Prisons Department is keeping the immune system of the inmates in good form by ensuring their participation in cultural activities and sports and by having sound sleep etc while face mask and sanitizers are routinely being used by the inmates and the jail premises are routinely fumigated.
Figures released by J&K Prisons Department disclosed that there are 4550 inmates languishing in 13 different jails of the Union Territory with Kot Bhalwal Jail of Jammu accommodating the maximum of 884 prisoners while Sub-Jail Reasi having minimum of 50 inmates and none among these 4550 prisoners were COVID positive as on April 29, 2021.
Sources also informed that among the 13 jails of J&K, Kot Bhalwal Jail was last fumigated on April 29, 2021 while District Jail Bhaderwah was fumigated last on October 16 last year and other jails were fumigated in the month of April 2021.
Also a total of 213 inmates have been quarantined by the J&K Prisons Department.
Sources informed that interview (Mulaqat) of inmates with their family members was suspended from April 27, 2021 due to surge in COVID positive cases in J&K. “However, to enable contact of inmates with their family members, telephone facility has been made available in all the 13 jails of J&K,” they maintained.
