NIA files chargesheet in PFI arms training case

KOCHI, Oct 19:  National Investigation Agency (NIA) today filed a chargesheet against 22 accused in the case relating to alleged seizure of weapons from an arms training centre of Popular Front of India (PFI) at Narath in Kannur in April this year.

The chargesheet was filed in the NIA Special court here days ahead of completion of 180  days judicial custody by the accused under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), which would have made them eligible for default bail.

One of the accused, Kamaruddin, is absconding.

Cases had been registered against the accused under various sections of IPC, Arms Act and Explosives Act.

On Apr 23, a police team had raided a house at a coconut farm in Kannur and seized arms and ammunition and 21 mobile phones. Twentytwo activists of PFI and Secular Democratic Party were arrested in connection with the seizure. The state government had handed over the case to NIA.

Police suspect that the arrested persons had connections with some extremist organizations, including Indian Mujahideen.

NIA submitted that further investigation in the case was necessary as some of the accused have received funds from abroad and their bank accounts and telephone records needs to be examined. (PTI)
