New bajra variety headed for Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat

HISAR, May 3:  A new bajra (pearl millet) hybrid, HHB 272, developed at Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) here will be released for cultivation in Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

K S Khokhar, Vice-Chancellor, said today the new bajra hybrid is high yielding and resistant against major diseases.

Speaking at the annual group meet of the All India Coordinated Pearl Millet Improvement Project at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, recently, he said this hybrid has been identified for A1 zone of the country comprising dry areas.

He said HHB 272 has grain and dry fodder yield potential of 44.8q and 101.0 q/ha. Besides, it was highly resistant against downy mildew and other diseases.

He said this hybrid outsmarted the National check bajra hybrid HHB 67 by 30.3 per cent in terms of yield. (PTI)
