Need to make local products more hygienic: CEC

LEH, Nov 13: ‘Nyi Skam Churpey’- Solar Churpey Drier was distributed by Chairman/Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Leh, Gyal P Wangyal, here today.
Churpey- the traditional form of cheese is a product of butter milk obtained after churning out the butter and separating the whey after boiling the butter milk and is rich in proteins, omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants.
EC Education Konchok Stanzin, Deputy Commissioner Leh Sachin Kumar, Director Animal and Sheep Husbandry Ladakh Mohd Raza, Additional District Development Commissioner Leh Moses Kunzang, HoDs of various departments, representatives of self help groups of Changthang, Digar, Tangyar, Durbuk and Tangtse were also present during the Solar Churpey Drier distribution ceremony.
CEC Gyal P Wangyal congratulated DC Leh Sachin Kumar for the idea and termed it as the need of the hour to make local product more hygienic and sustainable for consumption as well for further selling it in market. And in due course of time it should also be included in the organic category as the beneficiaries of this project are from areas where the animals are grazed at pasture lands and very rarely have access to compounded cattle feed, he added. To bring the solar churpey drier into proper usage CEC stressed on proper follow-up of its application at ground level.
EC Education Konchok Stanzin stressed on working on value addition of churpey and other local products like yak and goat cheese, hair and wool, for greater benefit of the farmers, growers and livestock rearers. This will also help revert back the opinions especially of youngsters from villages and help save the traditional agricultural ways for sustainable development, opined EC.
DC Leh Sachin Kumar said that on request of Kharnak villagers for a churpey drier, he came up with the idea of a solar and hygienic product and he appreciated the valuable contributions of some of the departmental heads who helped to bring out a low-cost, hygiene, and eco-friendly solar churpey drier. Small it may sound but such small interventions make huge difference, observed the DC.
Earlier, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Leh Dr Mohd Baqir and Dr Tsewang Morup also spoke on the occasion.
Later, CEC Gyal Wangyal also distributed Solar Churpey Driers to the Self Help Groups from Changthang, Digar, Tangyar, Durbuk, Tangtse and others.
