JAMMU, Nov 3: A webinar was organized by ‘Non Communicable Diseases Prevention Academy (NCDPA)’– a Subspecialty Chapter of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) on the topic “Fats and Oils in Nutrition and Health”.
The webinar was chaired by Dr Bakul Jayant Parekh (president IAP 2020) and Dr Elizabeth K E (UNICEF Consultant Kerala). During the webinar, Dr RBN Prasad (retired Chief Scientist and former Head, Centre for Lipid Research, CSIR Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad) spoke on the topic “Fats and Oils in Nutrition and Health: Myths and Facts”.
The second talk was on “Metabolism and Functional Importance of Oils and Fats” and the speaker was Dr B R Lokesh (retired Chief Scientist and former Head of Department of Lipid Sciences, CSIR Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru).
Dr Dheeraj Shah (Director Professor UCMS, Delhi), Dr Rekha Harish (Chairperson, NCDPA) and Dr Anju Virmani (Advisor, NCDPA) moderated the session.
The speakers discussed about the requirement of fat in different age groups. They discussed various types of oils and their chemical composition, how frying affects the composition and that no single oil is the best and we need to blend the various oils in daily routine, and avoid reusing of oils for cooking.
They were of the view that we need to totally avoid Trans Fats as much as possible as it is the worst oil made by hydrogenation process. “Trans Fats are universally used in all confectionery and baked products and are the worst oils as they not only increase the bad cholesterol (LDL) but also reduce the good cholesterol (HDL),” they added.
The speakers emphasized that one needs to understand the recommended dietary allowances limit for his age and activity level and we need to strike a balance between the intake of energy with physical activity on regular basis to remain healthy.
The talks were followed by an interactive question answer-session by the audience. The webinar concluded with vote of thanks presented by Dr Sud.
