NC leader escapes bid on life; PSO killed

SRINAGAR, July 16: A policeman was killed and another injured after militants attacked the car of National Conference (NC) leader at Muran village in district Pulwama today while a militant was killed as army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Militants opened fire upon the private car of the NC leader and former MLA Ghulam Mohidin at Muran this afternoon. The militants attacked NC leader’s car when he was returning from Srinagar. Sources said that as he reached in his native village, militant fired at his security guard from point blank range near a speed breaker.
Constable Mudasir Ahmad was hit by the single bullet fired by the militants and he was removed to hospital where he was declared as brought dead. Another constable Nazir Ahmad who was driving the vehicle was also injured as he lost the control over the car.

The militants also decamped with the service rifles of the cops but they left the NC leader who was sitting on the back seat of the car un-harmed .
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and massive man hunt has been launched against the assailants.
A police spokesman said here that militants fired indiscriminately at the policemen in Muran village in district Pulwama who were accompanying ex-MLA Rajpora, Ghulam Mohiuddin.
The spokesman said that the former legislator is safe and secure. “However, one of his PSOs Mudasir who was from district police was killed while the other PSO Nasir from security wing is stable”, he said.
“Apparently militants after the firing incident have snatched the weapons of the policemen,” the spokesman said. “Police has registered the case and investigation into the instant matter has been initiated”.
“Based on the initial probe it is learned that Zahoor Thokar group of HM militant outfit is involved in it,” the spokesman added.
And a militant was killed in an encounter near Safawali Gali along LoC in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
The encounter broke out near Safawali Gali adjacent to Batpora forests after a joint search party of 10 JAKLI, 57 RR and 41 RR challenged the movement of a group of infiltrators early today.
The intermittent firing continued till morning during which one militant was killed and two soldiers were injured. The operation in the area is going on against the rest of the members of the militant group.
Police today busted a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant module in Sopore area of Baramulla district by arresting its three members.
Police said that acting on a credible input, a joint team of security forces including 52 RR of Army laid an ambush at Haritar area of Sopore today. “During checking, a suspicious person was apprehended and during preliminary questioning, he revealed his identity as Bilal Ahmad Kaloo son of Ab Rehman Kaloo resident of Takiabal Sopore. He is an active member  of proscribed terror outfit JeM and 2 grenades and a Matrix sheet of JeM outfit were recovered from his possession. In this regard a case FIR number 65/2018 under Section   7/25 A. Act,  13 ULA Act,  has been registered in police station Tarzoo and investigation has been taken up”, police said.
Two more active members of the outfit were apprehended at Yarbugh, Rafiabad. They were identified as Asif Sheikh son of Ghulam Qadir Sheikh and Abdul Majeed Mir son of Ghulam Ahmad Mir, both residents of Yarbugh Rafiabad. One hand grenade, 4 rounds  of AK-47 and 2  Matrix sheets of JeM outfit were recovered from their possession.
A case (FIR number 92/2018 under Section 7/25 A. Act, 13 ULA Act) has been registered in police station Dangiwacha and investigation taken up.
