JAMMU, June 2: Natrang presented an English play “30 Days in September” during its Eeekly theatre Series at its studio today.
The play has been written by Mahesh Dattani and directed by Vikram Sharma.
The story of the play revolves around ‘Mala’ who was abused by her uncle at a very tender age of seven and the abuse goes on for long. The whole thing marks an enormous effect on her personality, her natural emotional growth is deterred and she finds it difficult to be with any man for more than the period of 30 days. She even finds herself attracted more towards older men and she thinks it’s her fault and confuses her exploitation for love. She blames it all on her mother who knew it but still decided to keep quiet and took solace in the worship of God. “Deepak”, Mala’s boyfriend tries to help her to overcome this mental trauma and also supports her to confront her uncle. One day, Mala’s uncle comes to visit her and she confronts him and blames her mother for everything that happened to her.
Finally in a fit of anger and frustration “Shanta” stabs herself with a knife and kills herself. The play leaves a question mark on the so called civilised society where exploitation of girls starts even within the family and goes on generation after generation.
Vikram Sharma as “Uncle” and various other characters, Juhie Mohan as “Shanta”, Subha Rajput as “Mala” and Uplaksh Singh Kotwal as “Deepak” all performed excellently. They were supported by Ashwini Bali, Sakshi Prakash, Kritika Bhau, Sachin Saini and Vishal Sharma.
The lights were executed by Rahul Singh and music was rendered by Susheel Raina. The sets were erected by Mohd Yaseen and Ankush Lakhnotra, while the show was coordinated by Sumeet Sharma.
