National symposium on ‘Biotechnology & Drug Discovery’ held at SMVDU

KATRA, Mar 31: National symposium on `Recent Trends in Biotechnology and Drug Discovery’, (RTBDD-17), was held at SMVDU.
The symposium was organized by Department of Biotechnology, SMVDU, and inaugurated by Sajjad Gani Lone; Minister for Science and Technology, J&K Govt while Padma Shri and Ex-Vice Chancellor, SMVDU Prof RNK Bamezai was the guest of honour.
Prof V Verma, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, highlighted the need for seeking the recent research in different aspects of Biotechnology from plants to computational biology to advancements in finding the causes of rare disorders by whole exome sequencing and NGS technologies.
Prof R N K Bamezai, highlighted the need of bringing research to common man.  He delivered the keynote address on topic   “Metabolic Tuners as Potential Drug Targets in Cancer- a Biotechnological Approach to Human Disease” and enlightened the participants.
Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, Prof  Sanjeev Jain,  stressed the need of blending of Biotechnology with the Ayurveda principles.
There were 13 Invited Lectures by eminent scientists and Ramalinga Swami Fellows:  Prof   K K Kapoor of  Jammu University, Prof  Yashpal Sharma of JU,  Dr  Shilaja Singh of  SCMM, JNU, New Delhi,  Dr  Jitendra Thakur of  NIPGR, New Delhi,  Dr  Fayaz Malik of  IIM, Jammu,  Dr  Neel Sarover Bhavesh of  ICGEB, New Delhi,  Dr  Deepak Salunke of  PU,  Dr  Shaida Andrabi of  KU,  Dr  Rajnikant Dixit of  New Delhi,  Dr  Surender Nimesh of  CURAJ and  Dr  Biswajit Gopal of  Sikkim University.
The valedictory function was presided over by Prof  V  K  Bhat, Registrar & Dean of Sciences,  who  stressed upon the extension of research in the field of biological sciences as the need of the present hour and insisted upon organising such symposium/ conferences for making people more aware about the different aspects of ongoing research in the field of Biotechnology.
