THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Favourites Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa of Tamil Nadu lived up to their international rankings by beating their State compatriots in the Squash men’s and women’s finals.
Ghosal, who lost the first game, surged ahead and won the game as well a gold defeating his team mate Harinder Pal Singh by 3-1 (4-11, 11-4, 11-8 and 11-6) in the men’s section, while in the women category, Joshna Chinappa, also from Tamil Nadu, notched up a comfortable win outwitting her team mate Lakshya Ragavendran in straight sets (11-5, 11-8 and 11-4). Tamil Nadu thus won gold and silver in both categories. Ghosal, who was ranked 15 in 2013, the highest ever rank hold any Indian, was holding the 24th rank currently. Ghosal had been the undisputed squash king in India since 2006 till last year. But his eight year-long reign was ended by Harinder in the National Squash Championships held in November, 2014.
Harinder, who is from Chandigarh, has been training in the same academy for the last 11 years. Both of them had helped India to win Asian Games gold for the first time last year. (AGENCIES)
