JAMMU, Jan 3: Newly constructed road tunnel at Nandni on the National Highway from Udhampur to Jammu was thrown open for vehicular traffic on Saturday.
The senior officials of National Highway Authority of India and Afcon Constructions formally inaugurated the tunnel. The other tunnel, from Jammu to Udhampur, is likely to be opened by end of this month as the work on approach road near the Tourist Centre is in progress.
The opening of this tunnel has not only shortened the road distance of around 7 kms to only 700 meters in Nandni Wildlife area but also avoided sharp curve, hair pin bends and steep grades.
The tunnel is properly illuminated and has 2-lane 7.50 m carriageway with footpath on either side. Tunnel T-4 has ventilation system to ensure pure air supply and a cross passage from left tube to right tube.
There are 5 bridges in between; one bridge between T-1 and T-2 has the height of about 52 m, highest in the project.
