Srinagar, Aug 28: In yet another example of communal harmony and a display of sense of belonging, a Muslim neighbourhood in Tangmarg area of north Kashmir today helped in performing last rites of a Kashmiri Pandit woman.
The scenes in the area ran high on emotions as the people living in the neighbourhood came running to help the families to perform the last rites of the elderly woman identified as Prabhawati wife of Late Tara Chand Bhan.
The woman had died last night and today the family had to carry out her last rites in which the locals gave a helping hand.
Prabhawati was a resident of Lalpora, Kunzer Tangmarg, where the Muslims and the people from other religions like Pandits and Sikhs have been living together for the last several decades.
For the people living in the neighbourhood, it did not stop with helping the family in performing the last rites of the deceased but, they also visited the residence of the deceased and offered condolence to the family members.
“They are living in the area for last many years, and we have been living in peace and harmony; the family is just like other Muslim families for us; we did what was our duty and did not let them feel alone-we had a responsibility,” a resident said.
On the occasion, the locals pressed that the pandits who are living outside Kashmir should return to their motherland and live together with us in peace and harmony which has been our legacy for centuries.
“They (Kashmiri pandits) must not be afraid of anything; we are their brethren; we have been living together, they must come and live with us as they have been,” the residents said.
