SRINAGAR, Dec 9: Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP), president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, today expressed deep concerns about the impending Supreme Court judgment on the legality of the abrogation of Article 370.
Addressing a gathering of the party workers here Mufti, who was in Bijbehara as part of her continuing public reach-out program, invoked the Supreme Court’s prior decisions, highlighting that the court had previously maintained that Article 370 could only be scrapped based on the recommendations of the constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir.
Emphasising the constitutional implications, Mufti asserted that any decision contrary to this established process would not only be against the constitution but also against the very spirit of the idea of India.
She framed the upcoming verdict as not solely about Article 370 but as a pivotal moment determining the future of India’s identity.
Mufti hoped that the Apex Court would recognize the enduring consequences, transcending political transitions.
Mufti called attention to the foundational values of the nation, emphasizing that checks and balances by the institutions should prevent those in power from undermining democracy, people’s rights, and constitutionalism. She rallied the people of Jammu and Kashmir, urging them not to lose hope and emphasizing the importance of unity to secure their rights and restore their identity and dignity.
