Srinagar, June 27: Demanding adequate compensation and rehabilitation of flood victims, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee vice president and MLC G N Monga Saturday asked the Government to take long term measures to control the flood like situations in the state.
Monga, who led a high level delegation of Congress to Manigam, Lassipora, Kalwal Chek, Muswani Chek in Devsar constituency to take stock of the damages caused due to recent flash floods, said, “After disastrous and heart-wrenching floods of September 2014, it was expected that both Central and State Government will take concrete measures so that such situation is avoided in future.”
The PCC vice president while interacting with the affected people lashed out at the State Government for being not serious towards the safety of life and property of the people.
The delegation headed by Monga, included MLAs Mohammad Amin Bhat and Gulzar Ahmad Wani, party spokesperson Farooq Andrabi and general secretary Hilal Ahmad Shah.
“It seems the Government is least bothered about the floods in Kashmir. Neither any short terms measures have been taken nor the Government is inclined to take long term measures to safeguard the lakhs of people from flood threat,” Monga said.
“With 24-hours rainfall thousands and thousand of people shift from their homes as government has failed to taken any measures to dredge the river Jhelum and flood spill channels. The government only issues statements asking residents not to panic. However, people on whom tragedy had befallen last year can’t wait till they are deluged again,” he added.
The Congress MLC asked the Government to direct Department of Flood Control must to start dredging and strengthening of embankment of Jhelum and other Nallahs at the earliest.
“Government must take all pre-emptive measures to prevent any future threat from floods. It (government) is also duty-bound to provide relief to those affected by the floods,” he demanded.
The Congress vice president also lashed out at the Government for failing to compensate the flood victims of 2014. “Only thing which has been done so far by the Government is making tall claims. However, on ground there has been no change as flood victims are still craving for rehabilitation,” he added.
