MLAs demand adequate compensation for land being acquired for Ring Roads

JAMMU, Jan 16: Several Members of Legislative Assembly today demanded adequate compensation for the farmers whose land is being acquired for the Ring Road Projects.
“The compensation being paid to the farmers and other land owners is meager”, said Choudhary Sukhnandan while participating in the question of R S Pura MLA Dr Gagan Bhagat. He further informed the House that there was variation in the compensation being offered to the affected people in Kashmir valley and in Jammu.
CPI(M) MLA Mohd Yousuf Tarigami said, “thousands of kanals of productive land of the farmers in these areas is under acquisition and the farmers have been agitating for payment of adequate compensation and rehabilitation plan”.
“Since farming community is under heavy distress everywhere, the Government must pay attention to their genuine grievances and try to address them on priority”, he said while demanding adequate compensation to the land owners.
Earlier, the Minister Incharge R&B said that compensation is being paid to the farmers/land owners as per the provisions of J&K Land Acquisition Act. “The rates are assessed/fixed for payment in the Collectors meeting chaired by the District Collector as per the guidelines/provisions made under Section 23 of the Act as well as taking into consideration the Stamp Duty rates notified for concerned area by the competent authority”, he added.
He further said that the process of disbursement of payment to the land owners was in progress and efforts are being made for expediting land acquisition process.
