LEH, July 25: Demanding for a new Councillor Constituency seat for Sunni community, minority nominated Councillor, Advocate Mohd Nasir, today said that considering their population the new Councillor Constituency seat must be created in Leh so that the community may have its say in the council decision making.
Addressing a press conference here at Press Club, Advocate Nasir alleged that absence of Sunni Community’s elected representative in Council setup makes dim chances for Sunni representative to get Executive Councillor seats in Hill Council due to which their demands, issues and aspiration are undermine in the Council decision.
He said that he is not blaming any community in Ladakh rather all communities were very supportive to their demands but the Government didn’t consider their demands despite repeated representations and requests through memorandum. He said that the demand was presented before the Government through representation and memorandum in the past as well but not in effective manner.
Nasir claimed that Government is in process of empowering the Hill Council through direct funding from the Union Government and their demands must be kept in consideration failing which he warns to sit on protest dharna warns.
Responding to a query, he added that chances of winning an election is based on polarization and since each community votes for their own community representative in the democratic set up, he hopes that if new Councillor constituency is created in Leh where population of Sunnis is more, a Sunni candidate will win.
He further added that presently Sunni community is placed either under Bot or Balti category to avail ST certificate. He demanded that Sunni community must be included under Argon category while giving ST certificate so as to retain their identity. He alleged that Argons are permanent residents of Ladakh since 600 years so why their identity should be dilute with any other community.
