Srinagar, Sept 12: A newly recruited militant affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was killed while a soldier was injured in a gun battle that broke out between militants and security forces in orchards of Shirmal village in Zainapora area in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today.

A police official said that on a specific input about the presence of militants, a joint team of police, Army and CRPF launched a search operation in the area.
He said that as the joint team of security forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the party, which retaliated, thus triggering an encounter.
The official said that during exchange of fire, a militant identified as Aqib Ahmad Paul, son of Mohammed Akram Paul, of Drawani Imamsahib Shopian who was affiliated with LeT was killed. He was active since 5th September this year.
A soldier of 44 RR was injured who has been shifted to 92 base hospital Srinagar for treatment.
The official said that security forces had information about the presence of three militants in the village and so far one has been neutralised.
He added that reinforcement has been rushed to the area and search operation is going on.
