Militant killed in Awantipora

SRINAGAR, Feb 7: A local militant was killed in an encounter in Nambal area of Awantipora in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district this evening.
Police said that based on a specific input generated by Awantipora Police, a raid was conducted by a small team of police at Nambal area of Awantipora.
“During raid, the hiding militant started firing indiscriminately upon the police party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter. In the meantime, reinforcement of 42RR immediately reached the encounter site”, police added.
In the gun battle, one militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He has been identified as Irfan Ahamd Sheikh son of Abdul Rashid Sheikh, resident of Karemabad Pulwama who was associated with TRF.
As per police records, he was a categorized terrorist and was involved in several militancy related cases including attacks on security forces and civilians. Besides, he was also providing logistic and other support to the militants operating in the area before joining the militancy.
“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one pistol was recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation”, police added.
“He has been missing since January 17, 2022,” the official said.
It is pertinent to mention here that 23 militants have been killed in 14 encounters in Kashmir valley this year so far.
In the meantime, militants hurled a grenade at SSB post in Chapper-gund, Ganderbal today during Naka checking by police. However, no damage was reported in the incident.
Police had laid a naka on the basis of inputs about militant movement in the area.
