MeT forecasts rain, snow from today

Srinagar, Jan 15: The Weatherman has forecast moderate to light rains and snowfall in Kashmir between 16th and 18th January.
“A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir region from January 16th and another Western Disturbance from January 18 and is likely to cause light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread precipitation,” a Meteorological Department official said.
In the meantime, sub-zero conditions continued in Kashmir with Srinagar recording a low of minus 4.5 degree Celsius today.
A Meteorological department official said that the minimum temperature in Srinagar was down by more than a degree Celsius than previous night’s minus 3.4 degree Celsius. It was minus 2.1 degree Celsius below normal for this time of the year in Srinagar.
Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest period of winter, known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan, which started from December 21. It is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 9.5 degree Celsius against 10.5 degree Celsius the previous night. The temperature was minus 1.6 degree Celsius below normal for this time of the year at Gulmarg.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 11.4 degree Celsius against minus 10.3 degree Celsius last night.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 7.6 degree Celsius against minus 7.8 degree Celsius the previous night.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 7.2 degree Celsius against minus 7.5 degree Celsius the previous night.
Kupwara recorded a minimum of minus 5.0 degree Celsius against minus 1.3 degree Celsius the previous night.
Leh recorded a low of minus 16.8 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 13.8 degree Celsius while Kargil settled at minus 18.6 degree Celsius. Drass recorded a low of minus 27.6 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 23.8 degree Celsius.
