MeT forecasts heavy, moderate snowfall in Kashmir between Dec 23-25

Srinagar-Leh NH closed due to fresh snow

Srinagar, Dec 16: Weatherman today forecast widespread moderate to heavy snowfall in Kashmir next week with Zojila in Sonamarg area of Ganderbal on Srinagar-Leh highway witnessing fresh snowfall forcing the authorities to close the highway for traffic.
There was light snowfall in Gurez, Sonamarg, Zojila-Drass axis this morning forcing the authorities to close the Sonamarg-Zojila road for vehicular movement.
The road has been closed as a precautionary measure in wake of the slippery conditions triggered by fresh snowfall.
In the meantime, a Meteorological Department official today forecast moderate to heavy snowfall in Kashmir during December 23-25. “As on date, widespread moderate to heavy snowfall (at some places) is most likely during 23-25th December. We are in for a White X-Mas (Christmas ) in both J&K and Ladakh,” he said.
The intense cold conditions continued across Kashmir with world famous Gulmarg recording a low of minus 10.0 degree Celsius. At the tourist resort, the mercury was down by nearly two degrees Celsius from minus 8.6 degrees Celsius last night.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at minus 2.1 degrees Celsius and against previous night’s minus 3.9 degrees Celsius which was the lowest temperature recorded this season.
Qazigund had a low of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius against minus 4.2 degrees Celsius the previous night.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.9 degrees Celsius against minus 6.4 degrees Celsius the previous night.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius against minus 3.9 degrees Celsius the previous night.
Kupwara town recorded a minimum of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius against minus 3.8 degrees Celsius last night.
Jammu recorded a low of 5.9 degrees Celsius which 3.3 degrees Celsius below normal.
Leh had a low of minus 15.0 degrees Celsius against last night’s minus 11.6 degrees Celsius while Kargil recorded minimum of minus 12.5 degrees Celsius. Drass recorded a low of minus 19.2 degrees Celsius.
