Lot of bungling and messing about gas cylinders has been going on in the State. There appears little cohesion in government’s policy about the number of gas cylinders agreed for release on subsidized rates and the fixation of rate itself. Initially the Government said that only six cylinders would be available per card per year on subsidized rate of Rs.408.50 per cylinder and that any cylinder beyond the allowed number will cost the consumer Rs. 750. But within just 12 days of making this announcement, the Government has come out with revised rates stating that additional cylinders would cost Rs. 920.50 and not Rs. 750/- as announced earlier. This announcement came after the Government held consultations with oil companies. Why is there inconsistency in such a major issue of public interest, one fails to understand. The Government had initially said that it would take up the issue with the Union Government and see how the situation would be eased in the State. It is strange that the norm of supply of gas cylinders and its rate in Congress run states are more bearable than those in Non-Congress States. Why should not J&K, too, have the norm at par with Delhi which is under Congress rule? The present stipulation is no relief to the people of the State and the Government must step in forthwith to mitigate the difficulty of the people.
