Mehbooba directs for quick response to WD challenge

SRINAGAR, Dec 9: As the Western Disturbance is approaching State and the minimum temperature improved in the Kashmir valley today due to overnight cloud cover, the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has directed Divisional Administration to be prepared and responsive for any crisis thrown up by the inclement weather.
Chief Minister has directed all the concerned departments like Power Development Department (PDD), Roads and Buildings (R&B), Mechanical Engineering Division (MED), Urban and Local Bodies (ULB), Public Health Engineering (PHE), Health and other departments to gear up in view of the weather forecast and deploy their men and machinery on the ground beforehand.
Mehbooba directed that there should be no delay in snow clearance operations and, as soon as it starts to accumulate, snow clearance machines should be pressed into service so that people do not face any inconvenience. For this, she directed positioning of snow clearance machines at critical spots beforehand so that snow is cleared in a minimum time.
Chief Minister directed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Urban Local Bodies to ensure that the interior roads and lanes in the city and major towns of the Valley are cleared of snow on priority and water logged as a result of snow or rains is drained out quickly. She also directed the PDD to ensure replacement of damaged infrastructure quickly and also put all resources at their command to ensure that there is no major disruption in supplying of electricity to consumers.
Mehbooba also directed the management of SKIMS and SMHS hospitals to have sufficient stocks of medicine available with them and also at all the district, secondary and tertiary care hospitals besides all the requisite doctors and paramedical staff are deployed at their respective places of working.
The Chief Minister has also directed the Divisional Commissioners to put measures in place in the areas in the region where heavy rains and snow have been predicted.
“Due to an approaching Western Disturbance, we are expecting widespread moderate to heavy rains and snow in the State for three days from Sunday night,” an official of the MeT Department said.
The official said that the cloud cover ahead of the Western Disturbance has led to improvement in night temperatures across Kashmir.
The minimum temperatures in Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg was minus 0.2 degree Celsius, minus 1.5 degree Celsius and 0 degree Celsius respectively while the day temperature settled at 11.2 degree Celsius, 11.2 degree Celsius and 9.2 degree Celsius respectively.
The minimum temperatures in Qazigund, Kokernag and Kupwara was minus 1.9 degree Celsius, 0.8 degree Celsius and minus 2.2 degree Celsius respectively while the day temperature settled at 13.6 degree Celsius, 13.1 degree Celsius and 11.7 degree Celsius respectively.
The minimum temperature in Kargil was recorded at minus 8.4 degrees Celsius while day temperature of the place settled at 9.9 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Leh was recorded at minus 13.0 degrees Celsius while day temperature of the place settled at 10.5 degree Celsius.
