JUTA too comes in support of demand

JAMMU, Jan 29: Students agitating for establishment of National Law University in Jammu, held a massive protest demonstration, here today and blocked the ever busy Tawi Bridge for more than an hour.
Even as Police attempted to disperse the protesting students and detained some protesters, Yuva Rajput Sabha President Mandeep Singh Chib and others foiled the attempt by blocking Police vehicle.
The high-voltage drama continued for more than an hour during which the protesting students kept shouting slogans against the Omar Abdullah Government and in support of their demand of National Law University in Jammu.
Earlier, a large number of students assembled near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh and held a strong protest demonstration. They were soon joined by some activists of Yuva Rajput Sabha, who extended their active support to the demand for NLU in Jammu.
As the protesting students staged a sit-in and blocked the road disrupting traffic movement, Led by SP City, Police swung into action and attempted to forcibly whisk away some protesters. However, the attempt to detain protesters was foiled by other students and activists of Yuva Rajput Sabha who blocked the road and did not allow the Police vehicle to move.
Taking out a march from Jammu University, the protesting students staged a sit-in near Bikram Chowk amid raising of slogans. They were demanding establishment of National Law University in Jammu, instead of Kashmir.
As the protest demonstration and dharna led to disruption of vehicular movement, Police swung into action and detained some protesters. However, no force was used to disperse the protesters.
Earlier, addressing the protesters, student representatives said the region has adequate infrastructure, academic potential and a strong legal fraternity to support an NLU in Jammu. They warned that if their demand is not addressed, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Jammu University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) has also come openly in support of the demand for establishment of NLU in Jammu.
In a meeting of its office bearers held today, JUTA urged the Government of J&K to establish a National Law University (NLU) in the Jammu region, asserting that Jammu deserves equitable access to premier legal education institution.
Congratulated people on the establishment of NLU in Kashmir region, the act for which was passed by the Legislative Assembly of Union Territory, JUTA simultaneously urged the Government to ensure equitable treatment for the Jammu region by setting up a similar institution here. The association pointed out that several Indian States have established multiple National Law Universities, setting a clear precedent for more than one NLU within a single State/UT.
The meeting was convened by President of the association, Prof Ravinder Singh and attended by Dr Hema Gandotra (Vice President), Dr Tirth Ram (General Secretary), Dr Mandeep Singh (Joint Secretary) and Dr Harish Sharma (Treasurer).
