JAMMU, Oct 16: An over speeding mini-bus today hit and killed a man in Kot Bhalwal area of city outskirts, triggering protest by the family members and neighbours, who blocked the Bantalab-Gharota road near MIET College for about six hours.
According to eyewitnesses, a rashly driven mini-bus bearing registration number JK02BP-5764 which was on its way from Bhalwal to Jammu, hit a man namely Jagidsh Chander (52) son of Kaka Ram, resident of Kot-Kaink, dragged him about 50 metres and then crushed him badly, at Kaink Morh.
The mishap occurred early in the morning when the victim (mason by profession) was waiting for a minibus to travel towards his workplace, eyewitnesses said, adding the mini-bus involved in the mishap went off the road while overtaking another mini-bus and before crushing the victim, dragged him for about 50 metres.
In serious condition, the victim mason was immediately rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where he was declared as brought dead by the doctors. After postmortem, the body of the deceased was handed over to his legal heirs for last rites.
Meanwhile, the family members and other villagers held a strong protest and blocked Bantalab-Gharota road for about six hours at Kaink Morh, demanding stringent action against the accused mini-bus driver and Government job to one of the family members of the deceased, who was the sole bread earner for the family.
On getting information about the accident and resultant protest, a police team from police post Chinore led by SI Ranjeet Singh and another team from police station Domana led by SHO Rajeshwar Singh Slathia reached the spot and tried to pacify the protestors but in vain.
Later, SDM Jammu North, Satish Sharma and SP Rural, Dushyant Sharma also reached the spot. On the assurance of SDM that he will take up the matter of providing Government job on daily wages to one of the family members of the deceased with the Deputy Commissioner, the protesting family members and villagers lifted the blockade and dispersed at about 3.50 PM.
The SP Rural also assured the family members that the absconding accused will not be spared, informing that a case in this connection has been registered at police station Domana and the mini-bus involved in the mishap seized.
