Martyrs Day: NC, Cong pay tributes to those killed in 1931 revolt

SRINAGAR, July 13: On the occasion of 86th Martyrs’ Day, National Conference and Congress today paid tributes to those who were killed on July 13, 1931 during revolt against the then Dogra ruler in Jammu and Kashmir State.
National Conference working president, Omar Abdullah visited the Mazar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Graveyard) at Ziyarat Hazrat Naqshband Sahab at Shehar-e-Khaas in Srinagar to pay tributes to the martyrs. He offered Fateha at the Martyrs’ Graveyard and paid floral tributes.
The NC working president was accompanied by senior Party leaders, including Ali Mohammad Sagar, Abdul Rahim Rather, Nasir Aslam Wani, Mohammad Akbar Lone and Salman Ali Sagar besides, various office bearers and activists of the party.
Paying glowing tributes to the martyrs, Omar Abdullah said the sacrifices of valiant heroes paved the way for the eradication of tyranny and autocracy from the State and sowed the seeds of democracy and dignity in the system. “The sacrifice of the Martyrs to free the society from autocracy and lay edifice for democracy and human dignity is one of the richest chapters in the history of Jammu and Kashmir”, he said.
Expressing profound grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the current unrest in the Valley, Omar Abdullah said the State Government was unfortunately more invested in portraying a false sense of normalcy in the State rather than actually working towards normalizing the situation by ending the cycle of killings and violence.
“The primary responsibility to stop the cycle of killings and violence is that of the Government and that must be done immediately. We are prepared to play whatever role necessary at the political level to improve the situation but first the Government must act and ensure there is no further loss of lives”, Mr Omar added.
National Conference District Unit Doda also paid glowing tribute to the martyrs of July 13, 1931. Addressing a gathering of NC workers and prominent citizens of Doda, District president of NC Doda, Khalid Najib Suharwardhy said that Jammu and Kashmir is passing through very difficult times where peace and truth has become a causality. He castigated the Government of India for back stabbing the people of the State and ignoring the terms of the instrument of accession.
Suharwardhy termed the present turmoil in Kashmir as outcome of the arrogance of the Indian leadership to address the basic issues. He alleged that the youth of Kashmir was being targeted in a planned manner to render a whole generation incapacitated.
A high level delegation of senior Congress leaders and Legislators, led by JKPCC chief G A Mir, also visited Martyr’s Graveyard and offered Fateha.
Paying floral tributes to Martyrs of 1931, Mr Mir recalled the sacrifices given by martyrs for the esteem of the people and State. Stating that people of the State would remain indebted to the martyrs, PCC chief said that they laid down their lives against suppression and autocracy and put the foundation of democracy in the State.
He said the unique position of this State is because of the sacrifices of the martyrs and their sacrifices would continue to inspire the generation besides leading them to the path of peace and development.
Among those who accompanied PCC chief to grave yard, included MLA Haji Ab Rashid Dar, MLC Mohd Muzaffar Parray, MLA Usman Majeed, Farooq Andrabi, Surinder Singh Channi, ex-Minister Raman Mattoo, Mohd Sultan, Irfan Naqib, Abid Kashmiri, Imtiyaz Khan, Kadfeen Ch G A Gujree, Amir Rasool, Ab Qayoom and others.
