POONCH, Aug 30: The body of Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of J&K Police who was martyred while fighting with militants in Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar the other day, arrived his home town Mendhar today.

Deputy Commissioner Poonch Rahul Yadan , SSP Ramesh Angral, Lt Col P S Parshant of 27 RR, SDM Mendhar Dr Sahil Jandial, SDPO Neeraj Padyar, BMO Dr Parvez Ahmed Khan besides several other officers and prominent persons of the area along with many locals from Mendhar and relatives received the `Tri-colour’ wrapped mortal remains of the martyr ASI Babu Ram, which arrived here today in a decorated police vehicle from Srinagar.
An official mourning was accorded to the police officer at his native place with full Police honour. Not only his family members but most of the mourners were in tears when the body of the martyr wrapped in National flag in a coffin reached home, at Darana, Mendhar from Rajouri air base. From Srinagar, his body was brought to Rajouri in a Helicopter and from there in a police vehicle.
Babu Ram had joined police force in 2000 and his first posting was in Doda. His one brother is also in Police and another a retired BSF personnel. He is survived by mother, wife, two sons and a daughter. He was recently posted in Special Operation Group at Srinagar and was deployed in Pantha Chowk area on the outskirts of Srinagar. The militants attacked the police party and ASI, Babu Ram while fighting with the armed gunmen sustained serious injuries and later succumbed in local hospital. He sacrificed his life for the sake of his mother land.
A pall of gloom descended the family when they received information about the death of their dear one in an encounter with militants in Srinagar. The relatives and family friends had started gathering at his home at Darana since morning.
Besides senior officers from District Administration Poonch, the Army and Police officers from Mendhar besides SDM, Dr Jandyal , Tehsildar Dr Vikram Kumar , SHO Manzoor Kohli and Inspector Waqar Ahmed Sheikh , many prominent persons of the area, Sarpanches and Panches attended the last rites. He was cremated with full police honours at Mendhar Cremation Ground.
