NEW DELHI: Swiss tennis great Martina Hingis today joined her Indian partner Sania Mirza at the top of the WTA women’s doubles rankings, a day after the duo bagged their second title of the season in Sydney.
The WTA rankings were released today and the 35-year-old Hingis has a whooping 11,395 points. The world number one duo of Sania and Hingis’ lifted their second trophy of the season with the WTA Apia International title yesterday, thereby winning their winning run to 30 in a row.
In a statement released by the WTA today, Hingis stated that it is a really nice feeling to have that No 1 ahead of her name. She also credited Sania for the achievement.
“It’s a really nice feeling having that No 1 ahead of your name. It’s definitely something I was aiming for, and with Sania I felt like I had the opportunity to get there,” said she.
The latest achievement could be seen as a major boost for the the US open and Wimbledon champions ahead of the Australian Open starting January 18. The duo definitely go in as favourites in Melbourne after conquering Brisbane and Sydney already. (AGENCIES)
