SRINAGAR : Major jump was recorded in the mercury, barring in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, in the Kashmir valley, where dry weather is predicted during the next five days. However, Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region continued to freeze after minimum temperature witnessed considerable drop again.
There could be isolated rain or snow in the valley today while the weather will remain dry in Jammu and Ladakh region, a Met department spokesman said. However, from tomorrow the weather would remain dry during the next five days, he said.
People woke up to yet another sunny Sunday morning though cold winds also continued in the valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where minimum temperature witnessed a considerable jump.
The Met spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy today in the city, where the night temperature witnessed a surge and settled at 5.3 degrees against yesterday’s 2.8 degrees when the minimum temperature during this period of the winter is considered one degree.
There was two degree above normal maximum temperature recorded in Srinagar yesterday. However, there was drop in the minimum temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and health resort of Pahalgam.
Against yesterday’s 0.3 degrees, the minimum temperature at Pahalgam was minus 2.4 degree, about two degree above normal. At Gulmarg against yesterdays minus 2.2 degree the minimum temperature there was minus 2.4 degree, about four notches below normal.
At Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the minimum temperature was 1.4 degree, more than one notch above normal while at Kokernag it was 4.1 degree, four degree above normal. At Kupwara in north Kashmir, the minimum temperature was 1.3 degrees, one notch above normal.
There was considerable drop in the minimum temperature at Leh and border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow. Against yesterday’s minus 4.5 degree minimum temperature at Leh, it was minus 10.4 degree while at Kargil it was minus 9.4 degree against minus 2 degree recorded yesterday. (AGENCIES)
