JAMMU, Mar 11: In a significant development, Jammu and Kashmir Olympic Association (JKOA) has suffered a major blow as Rajya Sabha MP, Dr Karan Singh, PDP MLC and president J&K Basketball Association, Yuvraj Vikramaditya Singh and Joint Secretary J&K State Sports Council and president Jammu and Kashmir Volleyball Association have declined to be part of the Association.
In a statement issued here, Vikramaditya has said that he was surprised to notice his name figuring as patron and that of his father as patron-in-chief of JKOA published in leading dailies of the State some days back.
“I am shocked that no one from JKOA ever approached me or my father to take our concurrence. I take strong exception to this blatant unauthorized use of our names by the JKOA as I understand that these election totthe new body of JKOA have been done in total contraventation to the guidelines of J&K State Sports Council and Indian Olympic Association. Further, as I gather from the newspaper reports that the JKOA elections have also been declared null and void by the State Sports Council, I am of the firm opinion that we people who are in public life and are doing our humble bit to contribute for the promotion of sports in the State, have a bigger responsibility to abide by the law, rules, guidelines and procedures established their-in. Hence in view of the circumstances confronting the JKOA, it woul not be proper for me to be the patron of this sports body. I humbly decline to be patron of JKOA,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Zamir Thakur, Joint Secretary State Sports Council in a letter to his Secretary has stated that on one hand, the president and secretary of JKOA allege that the Sports Council have biased approach towards Jammu based Sports Associations and on the other hand have nominated me as vice president of JKOA. So, they are hell-bent upon to tarnish the image of the Council and myself, under such circumstances I distance from JKOA and may not be construed as its vice president.
