UDHAMPUR, June 27: Demanding repair of 60- year old wooden bridge on Tawi in Block Chenani area, locals held a strong protest demonstration against the Public Works Department (PWD) and the District administration Udhampur.
The agitating people raised slogans against the Public Works Department (PWD) and District administration for their alleged callous attitude in repairing the old bridge.
The protest was held this morning after a proton of bridge caved in when a Tipper was passing over its. The tipper remained stuck on the bridge for around two hours till it was removed by the locals with lot of hectic efforts.
This wooden bridge, constructed over Tawi by PWD way back around 1959, is the only link between Chenani to Pattangarh, Dhanas Gharian, Nagulta, Tandhar, Satyalta.
However, being partially damaged and in dilapidated condition, it poses serious threats to the safety of over 13 Panchyats and thousands of people. Hundreds of local people and patients rushing to Sub District Hospital, District Hospital Udhampur have no option other than to travel on this bridge. Since the area produces vegetables in great quantity, the produce is transported from here to other areas after crossing this damaged bridge.
