LMD Kathua books erring traders, imposes Rs 16000 penalty

KATHUA, July 5: In view of ensuing Eid-ul-Fitr and ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, team of Legal Metrology Department (LMD) headed by Assistant Controller Legal Metrology Ajay Kumar Verma today  inspected various establishments particularly of Meat, Chicken, vegetable, fruit , bakery and  sweets.
Surprise checks were made in  different business establishments at Main Bazar Kathua, Lakhanpur, National Highway Lakhanpur to Hatli Morh, Danna, Tanore, Basohli Road Kathua and adjoining areas  to ensure  compliance to  various provisions  of  J&K Standard of  Weights and Measures Enforcement Act 2011(Amended) and   packages Commodities rules.
The team booked and penalized ten traders and imposed a fine of Rs 16000 for violations under the Act.
The department also directed the traders to use weights and measures duly verified and authenticated by the LMD and ensure declaration of MRP, date of packing (PKD), net contents and complete address of the manufacturer and consumer care number on the commodities to be sold in package as per rules.
In its drive to familiarize consumers with their rights and duties and precautions to be taken while purchasing the commodities from the market, the department organized awareness drive for Amarnath pilgrims at Lakhanpur.
The department has also warned the traders to desist from unfair trade and anti consumer practices to cheat the innocent consumers and also appealed to the consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing the commodities.
