LEH, July 12: The Lt Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), and First Lady Neelam Mishra today inaugurated the 5-day Ladakh Book Festival at the Indoor Stadium, NDS Ground in Leh.
Organized by the National Book Trust (NBT), India, with support from the UT Administration and LAHDC Leh, the festival aims to promote the rich literary culture of Ladakh.
Highlighting the significance of books, the Lt Governor commended the organisers for hosting the festival on a grand scale. He emphasized India’s longstanding tradition of writing books dating back to the era of the Vedas, stressing the need for Indians to take pride in this achievement. He underscored the importance of education and the roles of teachers and parents in providing quality education to students.
The Lt Governor acknowledged that while students today have access to diverse topics through digital platforms, the sanctity and importance of books cannot be replaced by Google. He emphasized the need for writing books, their availability, and the habit of reading to enhance knowledge. Education remained the topmost priority of the administration, with a focus on the well-being of students.
The Lt Governor highlighted the book “Exam Warriors,” authored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as an initiative to support students and parents during the challenging board examination period. He recommended parents and students read the book.
Chairman/CEC LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson, expressed gratitude to the Lt Governor and NBT India for organizing the Ladakh Book Festival. He emphasized the festival’s significance in benefiting local writers and authors from Ladakh.
The LAHDC Leh pledged support to budding writers by providing financial aid for publishing their books.
Renowned writer Prof Jamyang Gyalson and historian Mohd Sadiq Hardassi shared their experiences and requested the administration to promote books by local authors and extend the festival’s duration.
Prof Govind Prasad Sharma, Chairman of NBT India, welcomed the guests and highlighted the participation of 25 major publishers in the festival. He shared various initiatives undertaken by NBT India to develop and promote a reading culture in India.
